Just attached some photos of the ford ranger. I was going to buy a new Toyota Hilux crew cab 4X4 with the 3.0 turbo diesel auto only problem is it costs 150,000 brazilian reals which is $75,000 dollars and I was concerned of the injector problems the Hilux D4D were having, i hear now Toy finally made good on the issue and replaced all the injectors.... The 2012 ranger XLT also has an intercooled 3.0 diesel powerstroke crew cab 4X4 brand new cost was 86,000 reals which is $43,000. The ranger gets 30 mpg and only has 7,000 km on it, once broken in it will get around 32+ on the highway and 28 city. I can buy a wrecked hilux in brazil and ship a half cut to the states, I do plan to do a D4D Hilux diesel swap on my 09 Taco here in the states but the cost will be around $15,000 plus alot of time big nut to eat... I plan to set it up with 2 tanks and it will get 30+ mpg so my range will be 1,500 miles between fill ups!!! This is at least a year from now project but when it is done I will start a thread and upload photos.

That's a lot of money to spend on gaining 5mpg on a fuel that costs 10% more.

Yes My 2012 ford ranger 3.0 turbo diesel gets 10 - 12 km per litre, 3.8 liters in a gallon, 12 km = 7 miles I am burning 1 liter of diesel. 3.8 X 7 is 26.6 miles per gallon that is downtown salvador brazil city driving in a new non broken in diesel truck. The toy hilux is rated higher than the ford ranger in KPL. Also dieseltoyz employees have converted tacomas and are quoting 26 city 30+ highway with the intercooled D4D set up, that is a 10 miles per gallon increase over the 4.0 gas taco.

There is no doubt diesels are much better on mileage as I have a 2005 VW TDI Jetta Wagon that gets 45 mpg city or highway same with a bike rack on the roof, my friends same jetta wagon with a 1.8 gas motor gets 28mpg with a bike rack on the roof that is a 62% increase 17 miles per gallon in fuel economy diesel - vs gasoline.

I also noticed if I run premium fuel at $4.10 per gallon in my 4.0 taco it gets 2 mpg better (16- 20) than the cheap 87 octane gas (14- 18) with ethanol blend, diesel costs $4.10 same as the cost of premium gasoline so there really is no difference in the fuel cost at the pump.

And a final bonus is in a pinch (out of fuel on the road) with diesel you can dump in anything oil based and it will run, 2 cycle oil, motor oil, olive oil, auto transmission fluid all will run no problem, I once ran out of fuel in my jetta in the florida turnpike drifted to an exit. 2 fuel stations both without diesel, i bought 2 quarts of 2 cycle chainsaw oil and mixed with 25 cents of gas and shook up in a bottle, dumped that in and car ran fine for 40 more miles until i found a gas station with diesel, I always carry a 1/2 gallon jug of corn oil in the back of the car just in case of emergency

I really think the US government wants as much wasteful spending as possible as spent money means more tax revenue, if all vehicles in the states got 30 - 50 mpg think how much tax revenue would be lost... Also the american truck manf. would lose huge marketshare if the VW Amerok diesel crew cab truck and the toyota hilux were available here it would end the F-150, Chevy / Dodge 1/2 ton truck industry overnight. As the US government and the Unions now own Chevy and Dodge I believe the US government has blocked the importation of these diesel mid size trucks... In the end more burned gas / diesel = more money in the pocket of the government, we will never get efficent vehicles here as long as the government controls the situation.

Check out the amerok 31 mpg http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/04/volkswagen-amarok-pricing-starts-at-around-35k.html

the d4d is superior in every way to the 2.7 and bests the v6 in almost way as well.

if you like the truck and you have the money i say fuck it go for it. keep in mind though diesel toyz as good of work that they do still get used engines they are not brand new diesel motors they have anywhere from 10k to 40 on the odo according to their website.

i was seriously considering this as well as an upgrade to my rather anemic 2.7.

the 22re was a better motor hands down as was the 5spd trans hooked to it if i had that set up i would never want the diesel but. the newer motor and transmissions leave a little to be desired imo.

    Agreed! Diesel FTW!

There are a lot of haters against diesel. The way I see it is they do not have the experience with diesel, so they are biased because of what they know and have experienced.
I grew up in South Africa and we have had gas and diesel vehicles, from pick-up trucks to Mercedes Benz family sedans, and I will never buy a gas vehicle if I have the choice of diesel. Europe, Africa, South-America etc. all have huge percentage of diesel vehicles, most places probably more than 50%, because of one reason - it makes sense.
However, there are still people in those areas who prefer gas (aka petrol), so to each his own - I just think that the US is slow to introduce diesel because they don't realize the benefits (and some other political and capitalistic reasons also, but we won't get into that)

I wouldn't argue that the diesel is a better engine and that the diesel will get better fuel economy but have you weighed the cost of the conversion against fuel savings? It'd take you 30 years to make the conversion cost effective if fuel savings is your only reason for the swap.

Agreed, from the above posts it is not clear exactly what OP's motivation is for wanting to do the swap. If it is just the love for diesels and he can afford it, then it's okay, but to save money it will not be worth it (which is why I have not done it yet - balance between the love for diesels and financial sense)

It's been on par with 92 here for the last 5+ years.

Low sulfur had the price waggling between 87 and 92.
Ultra Low Sulfur spiked it... in winter it's higher than 92 because of the fuel oil demands.
