so, here is my crappy idea done in PAINT.NET

I realized the only reason i want a long bed is so i can camp in it without getting eaten... with a shell thats a minimal possibility.

I wondered, couldnt you make/get a hard mini camper peice that could travel inside the shell, but slide out when parked to give you enough space to sleep?

here is my "prototype" it took me all of 5 minutes to draw, so criticisms welcomed!

the yellow represents where i feel rention is nessecary, green where weather sealing is neccesary. white how it will travel and red how it will camp.

does a product like this exist?

SB's are cheaper and more common, not to mention easier to handle...

I dunno. what do you all think?

Thats the exact reason I ordered a long box... So I could sleep in it.
I dont think a product like this exists... At least nothing that is sealed that would keep rain amongst other things out.
Your prob better to fold the rear seat down and sleep on it.

Sport wheels added.
eaten by bugs? Or by a bear type eaten?

Why not make a screened in porch type of deal? Bed extender could be the base for it. Dunno

You can try Supertop made by Bestop. This is what I am thinking cause I will need the bed open but at times of bad weather I can have it closed. For my dog is the main reason. I train police dogs and travel an hour to do so.

For Camping you can go this route

Sport Truck Tentz or Adventure Tents. I have the Sportz tent like the blue and white one below but in Camo. I bought it at Costco. Sets up very similar to a ground tent.

Link for Adventure tents...saw it on a Tacoma...looks solid

bear eaten. in the uintah's where the SMALLEST trails i ever plan to do are. bears and cougars are a very real threat... fabric just doesnt make me feel safe... and i say this as a jeep owner.

In a perfect world, i would just get the access cab with a standard bed.

but in this world i need the DC's seating... but may have a time handling the longbed on the trail!

also, shorty DCs are a lot more common used, and it makes them cheaper... I would like to sit at around 20,000 on the loan I'll get for the taco...

the Longbed DC's are such a rarity, they seem to be several thousand dollars more, and lack the offroad option (though i sware i saw one!)

The DC LB is very off road capable...there are tons on here that do just as well as the DC SB. If I were you...I would get the DC LB TRD Sport 4x4. You have aftermarket lockers available. There are plenty around.

and my trails arent the most techincal, and i like to floor it...

in the end it will all come down to money...

but if i get the short bed, this may very well become a build thread!

also against me getting a sporttop, is the winters that can last from october to may in utah!

Being from southern California our winters consist mostly of man made snow so I have no idea what you are talking about. I will have to worry if I get sand in the cabin.

oh, i live on the Great Salt Lake, so i have to worry about blackened sand that smells like rotten death, and snow at the same time! yay!

as for this extension, i think Nidacore with an aluminum substructure would be the best way.... but plywood, siding and scrap steel may work too!
