Thinking about buying this. Needs opinions on rust

Hi everyone. First post here as I'm looking at buying a 2nd gen taco. I'm interested in this 06 Sport however the undercarriage seems to be full of rust. Can I get some opinions on whether to pass on this truck or maybe I'm overreacting? Thanks







There's more rust on the trailer hitch and diff but I figure we'd start here.

 

I've seen worse on later year trucks. There is info missing to give an answer on if to pass or not. Price of the truck, shape of the body, mileage, etc. I wouldn't buy a truck that rusty, but I'm very "OCD" with that sort of thing. It looks like with a a solid weekend with a wire brush and rust treatment/paint it could be made to look like new again if you're willing to do so.

Body and interior is in great shape, with about 75,000miles. Comes with snugtop canopy and step rails. Asking $22.5k

WOW I know most of that is just surface rust but if not treated well.. that's a disaster waiting to happen.. pass and report it to Toyota for inspection.

That truck is disgusting.

 

Given the history of our frames I would pass. That looks like a lot to me. I have seen worse on this site, but most were people that already owned the vehicle. Given the opportunity, I would try to avoid that issue.

It's really not that bad. Use it as leverage to get it as cheap as you can, then take it home and rust proof the frame yourself with POR15. It's good stuff, google it! POR15 is a rust converter that you can't even chip off with a hammer. It chemically alters the rust so it stops spreading.

 

To what history do you refer? Yours is an '05, which makes it the first year, is there something particularly wrong with yours or has it been replaced for rust issues?

 

This thread is pretty old... But basically I was trying to say, if given the opportunity at purchasing time, with one vehicle that looked like that underneath and one that didn't have any, I would avoid dealing with it in general. Toyota has bought back many trucks due to frames rusting. I don't think it is as big of an issue on 2nd gens, but they haven't been out as long yet, who knows down the road? My 05 has zero rust, but then again my 98 didn't have any either when I sold it and it fell into the category of a possible buy back (which wasn't needed obviously).

 

As far as I know, that issue with the 1st gens was conclusively linked with Dana skipping frame coatings. On top of that, the 1st gen frames were completely different and unrelated. They were fully boxed. Being fully boxed is a way of cheapening out the frames, it takes less material and less manipulation to make an equally rigid frame, but comes with the side-effects of being much more easily cracked and being impossible to clean out. When debris gets trapped inside a fully boxed frame, it stays perpetually damp and starts rotting from the inside out. The second gen frames are C-frames, reinforced top and bottom. They are easily cleaned and can't rot from the inside out, since there is no "inside".

I would also like to point out that second gen trucks have been on the road for 8 years now. The 1st gen frame rot problems were affecting trucks much newer than 8 years.


Now having said all that, obviously, given the choice between two trucks that are identical other than one having more rust than the other, I absolutely agree to go for the one with less rust.

You're in the Pacific north-west... coastal? I.e., Seattle? Pacific coastal regions are notorious for being easy on vehicle rot. Mild winters with little to no SALT, might explain why yours are rust free. I really wish they'd quit salting roads here. I'd much rather run around with chains or spikes and let the wusses stay off the road.
