back in the ford rangers heyday, They were a popular seller. Then, ford got lazy only doing minor cosmetic tweaks occasionally. Sales crashed, and ford pulled out which was purely a move to switch people into bloated f150's. Toyota owns the midsize segment, they won't ever abandon tacoma so long as sales stay strong. Tacoma also has more versatility than ranger ever had which makes it appealing to a larger crowd!

Wow! That's surprising. I drove the dealer I bought my taco from last night and didn't see a single taco. Lots of everything else. Then I drove b the Toyota in in town (both were on my way... Not stalking them) and they had 4.

Same story in my area.. Deals on eveything except tacoma. The lots are filled with prius/corolla/camry/ and you have to search for weeks to find a Taco. I think that speaks volumes

If I was making the choices for a redesign

-Slightly smaller dimensions over all, less curb weight
-Manual hubs that disengage the front drive line completely
-2.5L Inline 4 turbo diesel and 3.5L Inline 6 gasoline
    -Manual 4wd gear selector
    -More seat adjustment.
    -Soft mud flaps
    -Tougher bumpers
    -Proper leaf springs
    -More gauges (oil pressure, voltmeter)

There's lots of room for improvement on the 2nd Gen Tacoma, I am sure Toyota is working on it as we speak.

They pretty much suck if you put any load at all. OME Dakar leaf springs are the shiznit. $400... but they are 7 leaf monsters that ride smooth loaded or unloaded. and give almost 3" lift for the rear.

Stock are like 2 1/2 leafs. Dang ol' two fat girls and a dog in the bed and you're bottoming out everywhere, much less a real load like a yard of gravel, firewood or camping gear....

now that i invested in Dakars (and the rest of a suspension lift :D) i'm not bitter anymore but its definitely a shortcoming on such nice trucks.

Nothing wrong with the 4-leaf pac on the Tacoma IMO. It's a small/mid-sized truck...not a full sized dually deisel.

I'm on my 2nd Tacoma (2010 had TSB leafs...2012 came w/ 4-leaf pac) and I do plenty of hauling...hundreds of pounds (a guess since never weighed what I carry) and not a problem. I also towed a small fishing boat with my 2010, and had zero rear sag.

again, IMO...unless you have a heavy topper...or want a rear lift...I don't see the problem.

many who complaign about the leafs probably should just go buy an F-350 and be done with it.

everyone is free to have their own opinion.

I had my 2010 bed full of plwood...higher than the top of the bedrails...also had the truck full of concrete blocks...and never had an issue. I assume a truck full of plywood or block is over a few hundred pounds.

I guess I'm lucky...or maybe you guys are loading your truck and going off-roading. :notsure:

I also don't believe the truck is designed to carry heavy loads beyond what I noted...as I posted, if that's your intention...you probably bought the wrong truck and need to trade for a Super Duty F-series.

My leafs were flat and had sagged about 1" after about 4 months of hauling my 350-400 lb toolbox

If I wanted a full size super duty I would have bought one

The 1990 Ford Ranger I had before this truck could handle far more weight

Now that I have my Dakars I'm all good

I believe I'm good as she sits...and don't want to lift the rear anyway.

Plus, if I need something hauled beyond what I feel the truck is capable of...I have it delivered. (which is more times than not...because of size, not weight) Matter of fact, I have an outstanding relationship with the lumber/hardware company I deal with...I'll get a one lb box of nails delivered if I need them. :D

well i'm glad your 4 leafs work for you. As for me, I do have a topper, i do offroad with loads, i did want lift. and I dont want a fullsize ford.or i would have bought one. thank you very much. and i as stated, on my truck, the shit bottomed out with loads. my truck is a 2007, so maybe they upgraded since then. there was A TSB and everything to replace leafs or AAL or whatever.... So just cause your 2012 is all good doesnt mean it didnt happen to us in the past.... and not everyone can afford delivery charges for boxes of nails. (once again good for you. and i mean that sincerely)
anyway, i sure hope they would have made the leafs stronger by now. they damn should be.

heres an old pic from a couple years ago, when my truck was stock suspension. you could say its overloaded, but its a truck. thats its purpose in my life. and that is one yard of gravel. when i need six yards for the rest of the driveway...i will get it delivered.for sure.:D
    [IMG]

    Edit: Wikianswers sez:
A cubic foot of dry, loose gravel with 1/4" to 2" stones is 105 pounds per cubic foot. So, a cubic yard is that times 27, or 2835 lb. (There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.)

Thats actually not shabby at all.
