    I know most people want the solid axle for wheeling. But I've been thinking what about ifs and irs? Has anyone even tried it or am I crazy?

    IIRC., the US military did it in the M1911 MUTT. its a good design for fire roads, and the like,. but not much good for technical terrain.

    Now that I've taken a closer look. Those rod ends (heim joints) serving as the lower balljoint will snap at the threaded shank at the first sign of abuse... unless that's just a toe link.

    The HUMVEE of course has four-wheel independent suspension, for which Oshkosh had seen fit to develop a long-travel modification:

    Yeah, that was the very first thing that came to mind when I heard the question.

    In fact, there are some very significant advantages to independent suspension designs for offroad operation, including particularly, ground clearance. It also reduces the amount of unsprung weight, which improves handling. There seem to be multiple suspension configurations for humvee's, that one you show seems to have a very reduced ground clearance.

    Here's one that really demonstrates what you can get with independent suspension designs;

    Now contrast that with a "Hummer H2" and note the position of the rear differential:

    Hummer H2 is NOT the offroading monster that it was loosely styled after. It is, in fact, a "mall crawler".

    And just for fun;

    You can be sure that a genuine Humvee would have taken that hit, flipped the school bus over, and kept on driving. :D :eek:

    True that Honda has only 5000lb towing capacity. 2 Gen Sequoia has almost 10 000 lb towing.
    That does not mean those IRS will last long if you tow a lot but they are build tough. Quite amazing tought. That must be first vehicle since FZJ80 that Toyota had over build.
    So if one would pull that IRS and install in Tacoma it would make killer setup
