Torn cv boot. Not terribly expensive if you do it yourself.

Looks like wet boot though... might need a bear or bushing or whatever the hell is on the differential side as well.

 

Meh... keep a spare in the truck and just drive around with that one til it falls off or something.

Seriously, you're probably fine for a long time.

 

Reboot kit will cost like $13. Not a hard job at all. Or buy a replacement cv with lifetime warranty and keep OEM as spare.

OP, I think I have a new in box boot at the house from when I had my 2001 Taco. I'm not sure what model you have but I'll look for the boot tonight. If I have it, it's all yours.

Jon I looked last night but I couldn't find that thing anywhere. I can picture the dang box and I remember seeing it I just don't know where. Sorry man. I would go with what the other guys said though and replace the whole thing. That is why I had the spare boot. I found this that might help you.

my boot had a leak last summer, forgot about it and looked at it a couple days ago, inner boot was in 2 seperate pieces. Not a spot of grease left in it. Not sure how long it had been that way. Just got 2 re-man'ed cv axels from Autozone. Smthg like 60 a piece plus core charge.

 

Hey guys, accidently tore my cv boot on both sides yesterday(ripped just like the pic of the OP). Would you guys recomend replacing just the boot ot the the entire cv shafts on both sides?

You can re-boot the CV with a reboot kit, or for a little money more buy a reamanned one from autozone for $60

 

I just think i should fix it because this year ill be living where it snows and they put salt on the rod and dont want that crap in there...

My abilities are ok to TW standard... Those ok abilities would included installing a lift kit, replacing brake pads, welding and semi redesigning exhaust system etc... I have basic tools and a chilton manual and little money haha

Time wise i can drive other cars around while i fix the yota but i leave in 2 weeks so it has to be done by then

If money is tight, I'd just replace the CV shaft assembly on the failed side. I use NAPA "Max-Drive" new (not rebuilt) pieces having compared them to AutoZone and finding them to be somewhat better. Thicker/heavier boot material, larger shaft diameter, wider ABS reluctor ring.

And spray the boots on the other side w/ aerosol silicon spray to slow deterioration and dry-rot. I do all my under-chassis rubber & neoprene this way at each oil change...CV boots, swaybar bushings, frame donuts, exhaust hangers. I have yet to replace a torn/failed CV boot so it appears to be working well.

 

The only problem I personally see with just replacing the boot, is you have no idea if any wear or damage has already been done. If the tear is recent, you can get away easily with a boot kit. That being said, sometimes it is worth the time and work involved to just swap out the whole CV shaft and keep the other as a spare.
