I have almost all of the parts and most of the tools assembled in order to do this within the new week or so. The parts I still need are the metal (bronze, brass, ???) seals that go on both ends of the CV axle. I purchased a new CV axle and it didn't come with them and I'd like to replace them. Anyone know the Toyota part numbers for these?

Using the ECGS bushing as a guide, I'm fabricating my own version of the bearing removal tool.

When installing the bushing, would it be advisable to coat the entire thing in Lucas Oil Additive to help lubricate things on the way in?

The oil seal that people say they need the 2" PVC coupling for, is this the rubber one that sits in the differential? How far in should the new one be driven? Should it also be coated in some sort of lubricant prior to installation?

I've accomplished much more involved automotive projects before, but I always screw up when it comes to shaft oil seals. I would like to avoid that this time.

If the noise doesn't go away when they fix then bring it back. Make sure you tell them what you think it is. Tell them its a common issue. They might argue it but every service is documented so when you bring it back they'll go deeper. The diff bearing is covered under extra care...as well as CVs. I don't know about wheel bearings tho. My guess is yes....but its just a guess.

    .

I have my first 4x4 in a long time ... but have had several Toyota Prerunner pickups that were 4x2s.

With the 2012 (4x4) ... when I accelerate from a dead stop ... I feel a vibration somewhere underneath ... up to about 30 MPH.

It is more pronounced with harder accelerating from a dead stop ... especially up a small hill.

Only have about 1,200 miles and I wonder where the vibration is coming from ...

PS ... With a slow & very soft acceleration ... especially on level ground ... I feel little or no vibration.

Don't know the part # for the brass thing you speak of, but its called an inner cv dust shield. You can coat the bearing in oil, I did. I let it soak in Mobil1 gear oil over night just for fun. And drive the seal in as far as it will go. If you don't, then it has the possibility of moving or not being centered and it will leak. Good luck with you install.

Well Done! I've got to do this and this helps. Just need to find the time to do it (wife / kids) Then maybe I'll get some quieter tires for the street. Thanks

Just installed ECGS bushing and cvj axles, also put new brake pads in and got the rotors turned. It all went together perfectly and rides so smooth now. Thanks Chase!!! Then on my way home an idiot hit my drivers side mirror which smashed my window. Glass was EVERYWHERE. Of course he was uninsured, unregistered and driving on a suspended license. Always something.

For those of you that have the ECGS Bushing, how many miles do you have on it and did the vibrations ever return? I'll likely be doing this repair soon. Also, how do the CVJ axles compare to Autozone or Advance Auto drive axles? Any convincing reason not to go that route? Vibrations started within a couple weeks of my lift. I've already replaced both wheel bearings.

    Thanks!

I only have a few miles on my ECGS bushing but it feels awesome so far. And the cvj axles are rebuilt oem toyota axles, not shitty aftermarket ones, they cost more but you can send them your old ones and get some money back. Very good customer service, I would buy from them again without a doubt.

i read through this whole thread and didn't see or missed if someone asked this question..

what are you doing to "fix" the passenger side cv shaft slop?

my truck just started growling, thinking it was the hubs but they checked out ok. i checked for movement in the cv shaft at the diff and i've got excessive slop on the driver and passenger side :(

This problem doesn't usually present itself on the passenger side. Always the drivers side. How much slop do you have on both sides? (Prolly hard to describe online.... lol)

driver side is substantially more than the passenger side.

has anyone noticed any passenger side slop?

I replaced my driver's side diff bearing with the ECGS bushing with a new CV axle yesterday and it remedied the vibrations from that side. However, I still have some kind of rotational noise from what sounds like the passenger side but hard to pinpoint. I've replaced both front wheel bearings, brake rotors and pads and it is still there. It is especially loud when turning to the right, like a "whmm...whmm...whmm..whmm.", and when slowing down. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I'm considering replacing the passenger CV or wheel bearing again. Thanks for your help!

    Have you ruled out tires?

My first thought was the same -- tires. Try to rule out the easy stuff first before you go digging. Swap front tires or backs to front and see if that helps.

Wheel bearings like to make that sort of noise on a turn as well but you said you had new wheel bearings. Sometimes new bearings are damaged during the install or the axle nut was not torqued properly and have very short lives thereafter.

Jack up the front of the truck and spin each tire separately to see if any noise occurs. Also grab the top of the tires at 12:00/6:00 and then at 9:00/3:00 and wiggle like crazy to see if any free play is present.

Finally, how many miles on your rig? I once had a CV joint that made that noise on turns too.
