In this guy's case, I assume the other TRD features are more important to him than 4x4, but I'm sure you could...

i have a trd offroad prerunner with the rear locker. it is set for prerunning but on the rare occasions that i do crawl it it does great and the only time i use the rear locker when i crawl is when i cant bump up an obstacle. the only times i have ever been stuck is in super deep sand or super deep mud.

4x4 is awesome and with it you can feel comfortable doing whatever offroad. I have a TRD OR Prerunner with a 3" lift and 33" Nitto trail grapplers which are mud terrains. Have yet to get myself stuck and I do alot of backroad trails down here in the greater tucson area. Some times i just get lucky, other times its just having good tire placement mixed with driver experience. Heres what runs through my mind, 95% of the time im not gunna be using 4x4, i can get more lift up front with a prerunner (spindles), slightly better mpg (at most 2mpg) with 2wd, and just less parts to have to worry about/do maitanence on with the prerunner...again just my opinion, but I love my prerunner

i went with the 4x4, i have a 3" lift and no locker, base as all get out, but everytime i go out with a bunch of people wheeling, mine goes the farthest people are amazed at how far the tacos will go, it always impresses me everytime we go out. you wont have to worry about a lot in the 4wd!

ive never been stuck in my prerunner,(i hunt and fish a lot, and live on a cattle farm that i drive across frequently) i dont do any rock or real hill climbing, but i have gone through some soup in it. i got a set of turbostar AT's on it and if what im goin through looks soft i go ahead and engage locker before i get stuck so im sure its on, 4x4 would be nice but the i would just wanna go through nastier stuff and risk messing somethin up so pre runner is enough for me.

Ha ha so true:D 4x4 just gets you stuck deeper in the rabbit hole.

1 When you have 2wd pickup - you go for 0.5 inch mud and when you get stuck you either push or call somebody with ATV or riding lawnmower to pull you out.

    2. When you have 2wd pickup with locker you go through 0.5 inch mud/snow and you feel like now I am king, then you get stuck at the entrance of mud hole. So you call buddy with 4x4 and he comes and rescues you.

    3. When you have 4x4 you blow through 0.5 inch mud, and plunge in mud hole. when you get stuck you call buddies with 4x4 and locker or two to get you out.

    4. When you have 4x4 with lockers you blow through 0.5 inch mud, plunge through mud hole and after you come out of mud hole so fast your truck hangs on downed tree. So you call your friend with buggy and he comes and rescues you.

    5. When you have 4x4 with lockers and solid axle you blow through 5 inches, then mud hole, then skip over the tree and when all that testosterone builds up in the system you think 5 feet tall rock in front of you is just mall speed bump so you go for it and you blow tire, roll truck. When you crawl out take a seat on the rock with cigarette in your mouth, you look back on the path and think, "Who the F.. I am gonna call to get me out of that pickle"
That is very moment when you realize you are a big boy and its time to look for wood for a camp fire, cause its going to be long night.

A long while back on Top-Gear Richard Hammond broke his rear drive on what I think was a Toyota Landrover. He drove the rest of the way in 4wd (Front Wheel Drive).
Can't do that with a PreRunner.

i didnt see a "like" button but it sound like u have a bit of experience. i didnt mention that i would think if ur were goin up a sandy hill 4x4 would come in handy because of wheel base and what not. other than that, if i think im gonna have to go through something my truck wont, i load the 4 wheeler in the back, and i have a few ppl on speed dial if it escalates quicker than i expect.

I thought about a pre-runner to save some cash, but the SR5 4x4 was cheaper and I didn't want to ever worry about it. Done!

This, I'd rather have an SR5 4x4 for the price of a Prerunner Off-Road

I have prerunner or trd I wish that I would have gotten 4x4. The locker is OK, does fine on short hills, once you hit long steep hill with loose dirt or sand, you are screwed. Also 4x4 lets you crawl slow and be in control with or trd prerunner to not to get stuck you need to maintain speed... With more speed you have less control...

I went with a Prerunner, if I was to do it again, I'd buy another Prerunner.

It all matters on what you will do with your truck. I personally don't care about major crawling and have found with a locker and keeping on the gas I can get pretty much anywhere I want.
