I GOT IN MY 2012 TACOMA THIS MORNING, FIRED HER UP, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRAC OFF LIGHT STAYED ON. I HOOKED UP MY DIAGNOSTIC CHECKER AND IT SAID EMISSIONS CONTROL SOMETHING HAD A SMALL LEAK. SO HEADED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY OR TOMORROW. JUST CAME FROM THERE FRIDAY FOR 10K SERVICE. MY QUESTION IS WOULD ANYONE MIGHT KNOW WHAT IS KEEPING THE TRAC OFF LIGHT ON? AND WILL IT HURT TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT IF I CAN'T GET TO DEALERSHIP UNTIL TOMORROW? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP AND FEEDBACK.

There is a key on your keyboard that makes the caps lock light go off.

VSC/TRAC light is common to have with a CEL.
It simply indicated that the traction control is disabled.

It'll shut off when the dealer fixes the problem and clears the CEL.

Mine (2012 DC OR) did this last week, started it and CEL + TRAC light on. Back to the dealer (again), was told fault #P0456, Evaporative emission control system leak, faulty gas cap. Dealer replaced cap, light's been off for over a week now. Looks like it's remedied.

PS I still hate Toyota for manufacturing my Tacoma with acceleration shuddering and faulty clutch pressure plate (doesn't allow clutch, engine, and trans to fully disengage and allow gear change) which Toyota says are "characteristic" of the vehicle and refuses to remedy.

It would've been worthwhile to post an accurate fault message. Probably the same gas cap fault MotorsportsAustin posted. You can sometimes clear it by just removing and re-tightening the gas cap. Give it three good clicks.

Is this the RPM hang typical with Taco 6-speeds?

Toyota told me it's normal, although I think it's a little odd that when you let off the gas it continues (for about 2 seconds) to deliver the same fuel as when you had your foot in it, even though you've let off completely. If you put in the clutch it'll actually rev about 200 rpm's higher.
I've never driven any other vehicle with this 'feature', but have driven some with very heavy fly wheels (i.e. newer BMW 3 and 5 series) that like to hold the rpms with inertia.

^The RPM hang is a "normal" characteristic in the sense that every Taco 6-speed since 2005 does it. The FJ Cruiser's 6-speed does the same thing. Toyota hasn't fixed it for 7 years, and probably won't budge until the next-gen Taco comes out in ~2 years. (At which point the manual transmission might disappear... along with regular cab models. :() Wonder why Toyota built the RPM hang into the ECM logic.

If I keep this truck, which I probably won't since it's been a $32,000 pile of crap in so many ways (driveline shake, faulty clutch system, steering column knock, weak suspension, rattles...lots of rattles), I'll get the rpm hang programed out and report back on the effects.

Just got a new truck. Have 1348 Km's on it. The trac off light ,came on and engine light also came on and both stayed on. Shut unit off but both never went away The next thing that happened was that it started stalling on me It would start fine and run ok in park but once I placed it in drive it stalled. Some time right away other time it may be 15 Km's down the road. Waiting on dealer to test truck. Got towed to dealer ship on Friday evening. Having to wait till Monday to see what it is. They tried to tell me that I placed diesel in it. Any idea what the issue would be

Trac on and engine light on are normal for when the truck throws a code

I had the same thing happen on my truck , turned out to be something as simple as a loose gas cap that was throwing the code

Not sure what is causing your stalling issue though

My 2012 Tacoma with 17,000mi did the same thing this morning on my way to work. Both Engine and TRAC warning lights popped on. At lunch time I'll go out to check my fuel cap. I did fill it up last time I drove it a few days ago. Maybe the 1 "click" tighening didn't seal?

I'll see if this clears up issue before I call Dealership.

3 clicks and you will have to get the code cleared

Nope. Turned 3 clicks (usually just one as on cap instructions) and didn't reset anything. Will call dealer tomorrow and raise a little heck. 2nd time in 6 months check engine light has come on (1st time TRAC OFF). All they've done is reset and said all is good/normal. My time and gas driving there for a 5 minute job.

I bought this vehicle because they were bulletproof I was told?

Just retighten the gas cap and take it to a autumotive store... they'll clear the code for free.

yes-- i filled up at a gas station and the pump truck was either filling up the main tanks or had just left-- there was stuff in the main tank that was mixed with the regular gas that was being placed in there at the time-- i just happened to be unlucky enough to fill up at the time and transfer it into my tank. the gas company is fitting the bill for my issue-- no damage to the truck --

Dropped my Tacoma off to dealership this morning. They called back and said reason Engine light and TRAC OFF light is on was due to a faulty Oxygen/Airfuel Sensor. And they won't have replacement part until tomorrow. Oh well. Said vehicle was fine to drive though in this condition. Hopefully this helps out anyone else with same problem.

According to my dealership Service Department Invoice, it was 2 sensor's replaced, not just one. Oxygen Sensor & Air Fuel Sensor. I just want to be accurate for the readers.
