    Hey TW..

I hate to have a bad experience and bad news. I have a grinding noise when engaging 4th gear. Sounds like and feels like a synchronizer in the 4th gear, I have the TRD Quick Shifter. Dealership told me something is wrong, and called in an “engineer”, “engineer” hears it under a slightly quicker shift, only gear that this happens in. Tells me its normal.. I know its not, I called Toyota customer service, and they keep telling me they stand behind the “engineer” and there is nothing they can do. I only have 27,000 miles on this truck, and I know there is a problem, I baby this truck, and I am easy on it because I wanted it to last. I don’t know what do you guys? Can someone please help, I am veryunhappy with the service, and support, and I just want it fixed.. can someoneoffer any advice other than trading it in on something else?

I'm missing the point....Toyota isn't at fault here but it simply sounds like a shitty dealer.

Solution: Find another dealer. Get them to warranty it or document the damage.

    back to bone stock.
did they give you a receipt stating there was no problem? save that.

now take it to the next toyota dealership down the road..see what they say. keep that receipt too...if it should blow up, you can get it fixed past the warranty, because you kept the paperwork, and documented it.

personally, i would have had the engineer pull out another 6 speed and prove that it was normal.

And? Go to another dealer and see what they say. Some dealers will run it up the flagpole and see if they can get someone to shoot it down. Other dealers will just fix it. Can't hurt to try. What do you have to lose?

Think about the guys who went to the dealer asking for the rear spring TSB; some got denied and went to another dealer and they got it done no problem. I'd suggest you try the same thing.

I have the same experience, 2012 6spd grind in 1st, clearly crap synchro - Toyota offering the official blow off from the Field Technical Rep "it's normal". Yes the field rep shows up after you call 800-331-4331 and open a case file with Toyota.

I'm getting the same crap response for the drive train shake, which I theorize is related to the trans is prob worsening. "but that's normal too".

Meanwhile my 150k mile (+ 1 rebuilt auto trans after 10 years and 140k with towing) F350 is fine.

"Normal" for Toyota now is occasionally selling shitty products and no remedy. They only got 1 chance to burn me. I won't own another one.

Being an engineer and knowing engineers that work for many different industries, it makes no sense to me that an engineer would be trying to diagnose a problem...the term engineer is being used very loosely to make people who are not really engineers sound important and smart...usually they are neither

I'm an engineer as well, and you are correct. These guys are probably mechanics promoted to "engineer" and tasked with denying every claim they can. It's just a ploy. Aside from that, Toyota is well aware they have issues with the 6 speed. They just won't own it, and It has wounded my faith in the brand as well.

I was told it was a cultural thing...not wanting to admit to a mistake.
Nikon is having a lot of probs with their newest digital camera and their auto focus system.
Although they fix them when sent in for service, they will not acknowledge the problem or offer an explanation for what was wrong or even what was done to fix the problem.
I hope you get some satisfaction.

    Agree with badger.

I know you shouldn't have to do this on a truck with 27k but you are close to your 30k service anyway so dump the factory gear oil and run redline mt90. It'll cost you about 30$ to do so and MAY take away that grinding.

I'm not overly happy about the 6spd either. I've got a similar thing going on with mine in 5th gear. Switching to the MT90 very soon, hopefully that gets rid of the problem. If not I've got 59k on the damn thing and I might take it to Toyota to document it at least. At least they built solid engines for these trucks.

    Good luck.

    i have a question for toyota :)

why did they replace a great transmission like the one found in the first gen pick-up and tacoma with this turd of a trans?

the 5 speed i drove last week in a 1986 4 runner with over 270k on the clock shifted better than all of the 2nd gen tacoma's i have driven

a little off topic but, it's a step back in my book and a rather large one at that. don't get me wrong i have complete confidence in all of them meaning i think they are mechanically sound. but, they are no where near as easy to live with on a daily basis.

I know more mechanics that would be better engineers than engineers are at being engineers:eek: Engineers tend to over think a problem when its very easily fixed by thinking mechanically. just my experience with them. A promoted mechanic to engineer trumps an engineer stright out of school anyday in my book. most engineers even see how things actually work in the real world they just look at paper drawings and cad all day...

every 2nd gen manual trans i have driven has felt like garbage to me.

fucking unbelievable lol the 86 runner shifted like a car my 5 speed shifts like a garbage truck lol

i would just get used to it drive it until it breaks then fix it the new manuals are not great but, they work all the same.
