So I had my tools stolen out the back of my pickup this week. I had two of my toolboxes locked up in the canopy for a few hours. So I just lost all of my craftsman pro series tools and my insurance doesn't want to cover it because they said it wasn't locked in the truck itself. So this is partially me venting my frustration and also asking for any advice or ideas on how to get the tools back.

    Same thing happened to me.

Contents are not covered by the auto policy, even locked in the cab.
Auto policy covers damages to the vehicle itself and permanent attachments.

Contents are covered by your homeowner's/renter's policy.

Dad's tools got jacked from his Blazer back in '82... homeowner's replaced them.
Lost a camera from the same Blazer in '76... again, homeowner's replaced it (amazingly, got hold of the Allstate agent in Bishop on Saturday afternoon and we replaced it from a local store).

Sorry to hear. So your insurance expects you to keep all your tools in the cab? That's not safe, either. Maybe look into a utility cap if you carry a lot or if it's part of what you do. GL

So they broke the lock to steal the tools? Agree w/ Rich that this should be covered under homeowner's insurance depending on policy/coverage.

Unless you can prove that they are YOUR tools cl or pawn shops won't help you. I always etch my initials or something specific on that kind of stuff somewhere.

    DL is state only.

My dad used to etch his SSN.

Of course, that was back in the day when your military serial number was your SSN, and identity theft was limited to forgery.
Can't get away with that now.

I've already checked with my home owners insurance and they are covered but there is a $5000 deductible. Unfortunately my tools were expensive but not that expensive. We don't have any pawn shops here in town but I called they closest one and they can't legally tell me what thy purchase, they do report all their purchases to the police. I have filed a police report and it sounds like that might be my best hope now.
