    It is expensive tho. And it just doesn't seem right to open up the front diff without adding an ARB locker to it. $$$$ :bananadead:

    I love my 4.88's for DD'ing. For offroading it is nice that 4-lo holds me back a little better downhill. The only downside is that shifting can be a little more jerky, especially downshifting since there is more of an rpm jump between gears. It's rarely noticeable DD'ing though and isn't a big deal in 4-Lo usually either, plus that front locker bonus more than makes up for it:D haha

    With 33's and factory gears (3.73's for 2nd gens) my taco liked to drive in 4th at 75, unless on level ground or downhill then it would stay in overdrive. With the 4.88's it takes one hell of a hill to kick it out for overdrive:D

    I have been curious about the DD part. 4.88s are definitely more gear than required for 33s but that is an advantage on the trail or if tires bigger than that are in the future.

    On a related note, the other day, Monte, Ben and I were all cruising down the highway, pretty much going the same speed in top gear (~65 mph). For me that is OD with converter lockup. For them it was 5th gear. What was interesting was the RPMs each of us were turning. Mine was consistently lower than theirs, by at least a couple hundred RPMs. :eek:

    I was a little surprised at the difference. I know its not exact because the rpms vary quite a bit even on flat highway with the cruise control on but still, there was a difference and mine was always lower and of the three of us, I think my tires are the smallest diameter right now.

    The auto's for both gens have a lower overdrive ratio than the manuals. Mine OD is a 0.716:1 and 6th gear for a manual is 0.80:1. At 65mph will 33's I would be just over 2300rpm and the 6spd would be at almost 2600rpm.

    For first gens, I think the numbers are 0.71:1 for auto and 0.85:1 for the 5spd.

    im also for not having to really regear for 33s. I havn't had a super issue with them. My truck drove great with stock gears on the hwy till i added the roof rack, then the drag kicked my ass. But before that, it would pull up hills no problem.

    i am however for the front locker :cool:

    but whatever, its gonna be sick either way, im just glad your getting 33s :p

    Good, bored in class.

    I have a standard but still have stick gears with my 33s and don't have any trouble really unless there is a super steep hill on the hwy our trying to press on a two lane.
