Downhill = use brakes. I won't argue with the control of lower gears even going downhill. My FJ40 was geared pretty low with an SM420 trans and 4.88's I was right about 82:1 and my SAS minitruck was even lower with a Marlin Ultimate Crawler dual case with 4.7 gears and 4.88s. That truck was sitting at 220:1 so I'm no stranger to low gears and their effectiveness. The low gears made a HUGE difference in those trucks because they had a manual transmission. I use my wife as a way to measure that. She actually drives on trails quite a bit. In our FJ40 she hated driving it before the low gears because she struggled to control it only with the clutch. Once the low gears went in, she loved it and was able to drive some really difficult terrain. Same with the minitruck.

With our FZJ80 and the Tacoma, being able to control the trucks over techincal terrain has never been an issue even with large tires and stock gears because of the automatic trans. Downhill I can still go as slow as I want with the brakes. Climbing and crawling is so simple with an automatic and even using the brake at the same time from occasionally.

From my experience, the primary reason to regear an automatic truck is for towing and road manners. On the trail, I've never missed the gears. With my manual trans trucks, whole different story.

but it is nice on the trails being over geared...if i had 35s i'd be in much better shape for road manners...starting in 2nd is always fun too :D

First of all, Box Rocket you have a sick truck and I have been creeping on your build for a while :spy:

Second, after reading all the posts about regearing, are y'all saying that you *do* or *do not* need to regear with 35's with an auto trans?

This is purely out of curiosity. I doubt I will be going with 35's anytime soon but this is just good info to know for future reference. I can see why it would be a good idea to regear, but it isn't necessary? Sorry I just haven't seen anyone say that because just like you said as soon as someone mentions 35's the next post is "Oh you are gonna *have* to regear" etc. etc.

IMO it depends on what you're willing to put up with. 35's and stock gearing is going to effect your accleration, towing and general road manners in a negative way. Some people can't stand that. If they feel like their truck can't race to the end of the freeway on ramp then its unacceptable. It's a truck for crying out loud, not a race car. I don't care if my accleration takes a bit of a hit. I'd rather deal with that than spend a couple grand on a regear. I have better ways to spend my money.

It may be different for the 1st gens since you guys start with 4.10's, but I went to just 33's and my freeway driving went to shit. To maintain anything above 65 mph I had to be on level ground or going downhill to stay in overdrive. Otherwise the auto would always have to downshift to 4th. Anything thing steeper than a mild hill would cause the auto to shift down to 3rd. This raped my freeway MPG. Regearing to 4.88's brought my MPG's almost back up to factory. I mention this because tacoman has an FJC and I assume they have they same drive train as the 2nd gens.

 Already did:D 4.88's with an ARB up front. I couldn't keep the 3.73 in the rearend. After the 2nd one I just went to 4.88's.

ok back on topic. I'm on the search for some Glassworks 4.5" fenders. If anyone knows of any for sale, please let me know. I had found some but they sold already.
