Watch out for the box jellyfish that occurs 8-10 days after a full moon if you want to go swimming in the ocean in Hawaii. Although not fatal, it is very irritating. See the calendar at http://www.waquarium.org/boxjelly-calendar.html.

Another vote for Hanelei on Kauai. Wifey and I stayed at some resorty place in Princeton over Christmas for 10 days and it cost a small fortune, but it was the most relaxing vacation I've ever had.
Hiking the trail at the counterclockwise end of the road (Nepali Coast?) was beautiful, as was the beach at the end of the road. It wasn't crowded. We had delicious fish tacos just about every day, kayaked up some river near Kapa'a then hiked a couple of miles to some waterfall that sounded like a rocket taking off, chilled by the pool, chilled by the beach, drove around just looking at scenery, checked out the "grand canyon of Kauai" on what appeared to be the foggiest day ever...
BUT, you need to stay away from the airport town (Lahue maybe?) because it has shitty traffic. We stayed mostly in the north-northwest area.

AND there was an unreal amount of truck porn to stare at. I spent more time looking at old assed lifted toyotas than I spent looking at booty.

The only bad memory I have was that someone was either raping or slaughtering a pig across the street from the fish taco restaurant just before the strip malls in Hanelei. Even though it was behind some tall hedge, the pig was LOUD and it went on for like 10 minutes. The constant squealing/shrieking made eating lunch a little unpleasant.
