Look at WWII Jeep tires or Deuce tires... skinny. Even Hummer tires are not that wide comparatively to the size of the rig.

I have run 255/85R16's for years with great results, been all over CA, AZ and Baja with zero issues.

Tacodoc knows a thing or two bout off roading. ;)

I would have run the 255s too but they wouldn't clear with stock suspension from what I've read.

This what I want as well on my Tacoma, just have to figure out what suspension mods I need (presently stock on my 2012 AccessCab SR5 4x4).

Probaby getting the Camburg uniball UCAs, but unsure on coilovers..

Some people in here think you hydro-plain over mud and snow with a wider tire and they are simply wrong. The difference between a 285 and a 255 is 1" in width. If you get stuck because of a 1" difference you need to learn how to drive.

I have never been stuck due to lack of this 'floatation' and I wheel in marshes and deep sugar sand.

Clearance is key. I have been stuck numerous times due to high centering so I got me a set of 255/85/16's.

Exactly! Most people down here have wide tires cause they think they do better in mud. Havin an inch more clearance is gonna help a lot more than an inch width

    I have 255/85/16 BFG KM2s on 1st Gen TRDs (4.5"BS) with a full 3" lift front & rear.
No rubbing/trimming (slightly brush the bump on the mud flap if I'm at full lock & bounce the front too hard).
Great tires never got stuck with them.

Love that this thread is still going. :)

I'm starting ot think about my tires...again. Last weekend in the rain on some tight roads saw the backend constantly breaking traction. These stock all seasons are kinda crappy when you use any amount of gas... Driven moderately, they're fine, but still...

When I see pics of my truck with my older squat fat tires I kinda wonder why I didn't go with tall/skinny to begin with.

I ahve been reading old threads all day (between turkey induced naps)...I think I read so much back & forth i am a bit tire drunk.

I am wanting to go with the 255/85/16. I have 16x8 procomp wheels. Wil these work or will I need a set of stock rims?

8" will work (quite a few people here use them) but 7" would look & work better.

X2. I wouldn't run an 8 inch though cause I don't wanna scratch my wheels all up. The first gen wheels are awesome for this tires. IMO

Yes they are. 7" wide & .75" less back space.
