I bought a Tacoma about 6 months ago and really like it but it is just not big enough for my needs at this time (kids, remodelling, etc). I am going to trade it in and get either a Tundra (not Crewmax) or a Silverado. I am aware of the mileage discussion and Chevy being owned by the governemnt so I am looking for opionions other than those two. I will haul a trailer occasionaly but not all the time, so in other words I wont be hauling heavy loads. I know most here say the Tundra is better and I am probably going to get the Tundra, but would appreciate some opions. I am not asking if I should go full size or not but I am asking what you guys think I should get between the two. And Ford is completely out due to a Ford F150 fire I had several years ago due to the faulty cruise control switch (totaled both of my vehicles). Thank in advance for your opinions.

Between the Tundra and the Silverado, I'd go for the Chevy. I've always found them to be comfortable and the ones I've owned have been reliable. I traded mine on a Tacoma because I wanted something smaller. The Tundra with the smaller V8 is supposed to be nice with good power and good MPGs. The 5.7L is a beast with tons of power but the fuel economy is horrible.

Personally, I'd go with the Chev if I was in the market for a full size. [IMG]

Silverado or any current chevy/gmc truck would be my very last choice. I would get F150 in a half ton, but completely understand why you are not going to based on your previous experience. Then maybe RAM or Tundra. I would not consider ancient Titan unless a super deal was about to be made and only then the GM twins. Imo they are that cheap. Just my 2c.

So in short Tundra if you are deciding strictly between those two.

Price wise, are both Chevy and Tundra the same when looking at close to the same packages? It is almost impossible to tell what price something is looking onling.

Also, are the 2012 Rams any good. All I ever hear about Ram is that they look great but have transmission problems.

Another thing is the Tundra is going to be worth more if you need to sell it later on.

My cousin and a few co-workers have Rams. My cousin has the Hemi, my co-workers have the smaller V8. The hemi is a strong engine but isn't great on gas. The smaller V8 gets good mileage though. I can say that the Ram rides really really really smooth! It really is impressive how nice they ride. I haven't heard anything about their transmissions lately so I'm not sure if they got their mechanical issues under control or not. No one I know who has a Ram has any regrets or any issues with theirs.

    Duramax is a great engine.
    You couldn't give me a gas-engined Silverado.

As much as I hate Ford, I'd have to pick Ford over Chevy for a gas-engined truck.

OK, i test drove both and like both trucks. The decison will be tough on which one I will get. How negotiable are "internet" prices. Toyota gave me what appears to be a good price of the sticker something like $4k of sticker), but then is it negotiable much beyond that?

Might be able to haggle them more. 4k is off is pretty good though. Might be able to get a good deal on the Chevy if you don't need it right now since they're being redesigned next year so perhaps could get a deal on a leftover. Personally an F150 FX4 or Ram 1500 sport would be my 2 preferences.

Personally If i were in the market for a gas full size truck i would get a tundra. If i was in the market for a diesel Im not sure what I would consider, i think chevy would be off my list just from previous bad experiences with their electronics going bad

I like both trucks, love the 2012 F-250 too. It's a toss up since we are talking big money for big trucks. I'm very surprised that there aren't more Toyota lovers on this forum though, it's what attracted me to the thread. If you haven't maybe you should post the question to a Tundra forum too to get a better feel for their arguments.

Interesting. I drove a 1999 GMC Sierra 1/2ton from new in '99 until about 6 weeks ago when at 173,000 miles I was ready to move on. The GMC was incredibly reliable and completly maintenance free. I did have to replace the in-tank fuel pump many years ago and I changed oil (Mobil 1) every 5k miles. So when I went looking fo new trucks I had a slightly different needs than before as I no longer have a boat or a camping trailer. I looked at full size Chevy Silverado and in a 4x4 found that I had to pretty much buy and entry level truck to stay within my 32k budget. The Chevy I test drove was nice and had they had one in something besides black or white I probably would have bought it.

The next day I went to the Toyota dealer and since I had owned two small Toyota trucks long ago and they were reliable, I looked at the Tacoma. For the same $32k I bought an Access Cab, 4x4, V6, SR-5, pretty much loaded. Dealer made it painless. The only thing wrong with the Tacoma is this website where I have discovered that I need better tires, a suspension lift, etc., etc.

The 4 to 6 MPG better fuel mileage with the Tacoma (over the full size Chevy) is nice too, but don't let anyone tell you the Chevy is no good because mine was supremely reliable and problem free.

To Me the biggest difference (Tacoma -vs- Silverado) is price. A nicely dressed out Chevy is at least $10k more than a similar Tacoma, but it will pull more if this is a concern.

In My world the full size truck market belongs to Chevy (GMC), Ford, and Dodge because they invented it!

In the small (mid-size) truck market: Tacoma Rules!

I really like my 4.6L Tundra DC.
Honestly I did not consider any of the other full size mfgs.
Its been almost a year since I traded in my DC tacoma for it. There are moments I miss the tacoma such as small store parking lots. Also the interior is roomy, almost too roomy for reaching down into the door pockets is challenging.
I am always losing something lol.
Lately I have been toying going back to a tacoma..............but the power is nice & the full size bed, some creature comforts.
    Decisions Decisions all around.

I just got a Tacoma after 9 years of driving a Chevy (still do, just not as much). The Chevy is an 03 4.8L 1500 with 312K+ and still running strong. On the second alternator and third water pump and one brake job is basically all that I have had done other than the usual consumables.
