im in the begining stages of building a new home and trying to cover all my bases. i been given the green light on building a larger garage. ive decided to wait to buy a tacoma for now to help pay for all the extra's.

what i need to know from you guys that park your trucks in the garage. how big do i need to build to have a working garage? 33'' on a 3' lift, what size garage door (height so i can drive in without smashing the roof).

my guess is standard height will work fine.

Was gonna get a 8 or 9 but everyone talked me into 12 wide because its not much more and I'm so glad I did. Would have gone bogger now personally but 12 does a great job. Mine is 22x22. 7 feet high too and I fit my 11 access cab with 1.75 front 5100s and 32s with lots of room

You may want to add stuff on top down the road and you might be screwed if you need to get in/out then with a 7' opening. I bought this house long before deciding to buy a Taco and raise it, and now I have a HUGE PITA when it comes to my RTT. I originally had everything worked out so I could roll in and out with it on top of my Jeep, but that's all changed now.

My '11 AC is on 32's with rear spring TSB and Billies all-around with front at 1.75". My RTT is hoist-mounted to my garage ceiling. Without doing anything, I have to lose 3-3/4" to get out of the garage with the tent on top of the camper shell rack. In order to do so, I now have to-

    a) make sure fuel tank is topped off
    b) load absolutely everything I'm taking with me into the truck
    c) drop my rear tires down to 10 psi
    d) attempt to get out then swear while backing back in because I still can't
    e) start setting large rubbermaid tubs onto gap between bed/tailgate
    f) break out hose and fill between 30 and 60 gallons of water depending on rest of gear load
    g) creep sloooooowly out then dump water in driveway, break out compressor, refill tires, then clean up and put everything away
    h) go back in the house and swear for 20 minutes while trying to cool off and de-sweat before getting in the truck to leave

With a 2nd person, the 120lb RTT can be taken down and hand-carried outside then put on top, but it takes two people tall enough and strong enough to do so. Most of the time I don't have that option, so I'm stuck figuring it out this way. Yeah, get a taller doorway up front.

    Bigger is better.
Want to put some offroad lights on the roof? Going to need a taller door.
Need enough roof space inside to jack the truck up enough to work under it.... you really, really want a 10ft door with 12ft roof.

    Inside dimensions?
Silverado 3500 Dually Crew cab (not going to get bigger than that) is 8ft wide not including the mirrors. It's about 21ft long.

Tacoma DCLB is 6'3" wide by almost 19ft long.

Personally, building a garage from the ground-up?
I'd go with a 30ft depth and 30ft width, and I'd go tandem on one of the bays, so half of the garage is 60ft deep by 15ft wide for a workshop area, or to keep a project car.
Run the roof high enough and you can install a lift in the tandem area.

as much as i would love to go wild, im looking at building a two story house with and attached garage either 23x23 or 24x24. the roof line is close to the 7' door as it is. the standard garage these days is 19x19'. my girl friend is very supportive of the larger garage (an extra) she gets granite counter tops. lol.

this garage is not for the toyota its for my 91 GTA trans am and her car. but!!! i need to be able to work on the truck at some point.

if you are building new...and have the ceiling height...

unless your overhangs cantilever, and you have a steep pitch roof...along with huge/wide overhangs (soffits), all doubtful...

you would be crazy not to spring for the few extra bux and get an 8 foot door.

This is true, I'll find out the extra cost which should be minimal. If its possible why not. Work van would be nice if it fit aswell

it's only a few hundred bux, if I recall.

as a plus, the taller door...puts the tracks and rigging brackets closer to the ceiling...especially noticable with a 10' ceiling height.

also, if you get an opener...consider the belt over the chain. I've had both and there is no comparison.

one more, they now offer a "jack shaft" opener that attaches directly to the door rod/ spring over the top of the door...mounts on the wall alongside the top of the door. real quiet and almost commercial-like. cost on this made me have to pass though. (especially since I'm buying two doors)

we are opting for the upgraded insulated doors and the "barn door" look in lieu of the standard panel door.

and, here in Florida...we are required to upgrade to the wind load 150mph door. another expense.

yeah...I know a little about these doors.
