Personally, Id give it a try with the fluid in it. You will know right away if it will work or not. Try it with what you have, if it doesnt work, THEN figure out a different route.

As someone who was a pipefitter for over a year and a welder for almost 2
    I would say
If you aren't confindent in your welder/or ability their of
I wouldn't try putting it to your beloved umpteen thousand dollar truck
Id say go find a welder who knows what hes doing to do it

Or you could just get pieces of metal of similar thickness and size and alloy? possibly
and try it on that first

I am really starting to lean that way. As I mentioned earlier I do have a buddy that has a large MIG welder that I may just try and use first and not waste my time with my little dinky welder. His setup is full MIG with the shielding gas. I am one of those people that really hates to have someone else do my work, regardless if I should:D I like to use these opportunities to learn if I can, although at some point I should just call defeat.

UPDATE: I took it to a local welding shop and had them weld it up for me. The guy charged me $25 and I gave him $30. I prepped the metal for him before I took it in to help him out a bit. He used a Miller Millermatic 251 welder. Awesome unit, I want one:D It looked like he had it set at 18v/260amps. I'm not sure if that it totally right. I told him I was originally going to use my little 100amp unit to weld it on and he said it probably would have come off as soon as it took a hit from a rock or stump.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
I have a Lincoln 100 HD with 100 amps max output. I've welded everything with it. I use flux core, which tends to splatter a lot. But when I'm welding something thick, I use the highest output setting with a somewhat slower feed rate on the wire. "Supposedly" the welder is only meant to weld up to 1/8" steel, but I've built several custom racing mower frames and a few other projects with it and I've welded 3/4" bolts end-to-end just fine.

My advice is to try and keep it slow. You want to make sure you get good penetration with the bead. Also- the steel needs to be nice and clean.
