Hello everyone, as stated in the title I am in need of some guidance. I will be dropping the truck off first thing in the morning. Here is the issue, under extreme acceleration the truck exhibits a severe shutter with a metallic metal on metal sound. I can reproduce it if I hold the brake and give it gas at the same time. I checked the driveline and all u joints are solid as well as the carrier bearing. I recently had all the front diff and transfer case actuator replaced. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Well I just dropped the truck off, and now I am patiently waiting for an update. I did request a mechanic go for a ride along with me and he confirmed the noise as well. He did state that he has never heard a Tacoma make a noise like that before. Well we shall see....

When you say you can reproduce it if you hold the brake and gas at same time, are you referring to power braking, where your truck is not moving at all?

Not exactly, the truck is still moving. I would say under 10mph but not enough to break the tires loose, just enough to put a strain / load on it.

Auto trans, right? I remember reading about a guy who's flexplate cracked, with similar symptoms. Here's to hoping its not, or that you still have powertrain warranty if it is. Worth a check either way.

Double-check those u joints, get a pipe wrench and twist the dive shaft, sounds like sometime in the driveline to me

    Maybe a front wheel bearing?

As of right now the dealership indicated it needs a new carrier bearing, and as a precaution they are going to replace the u joints as well. I have replaced these items on previous Toyota's so I was pretty confident when I crawled under there last night and twisted / pulled / pried on everything that these items were ruled out. At a minimum if this is the case I placed a call to Tom Woods and will get a one piece for 390.00 shipped, because next time it will not be covered under warranty.

How many miles on your truck? I have an '08 4x4 sport with 115,000. Is this a common problem?

Wonder what causes that at such low miles?

I really have no idea, the truck has never been abused or off roaded. The only neglect would be that it gets placed in storage for up to 6 months at a time.

Any car can get a part failure at any age. I have been in the dealerships where cars have every imaginable failure from engine to electrical to bearing issues with less than 10k miles. It is inevitable that when you produce 100k cars/trucks a year or more in a production line, that you are going to have bad parts in there somewhere. It is the result of mass-production.

Inevitable, yes. But not always at the same rate. Good quality control practices can minimize this inevitability, but of course, never eliminate it.

Which is true. Regardless of the manufacturer though, you will always have enough failures to keep the dealerships going. It doesn't matter if it is GM, Ford, Dodge, or Toyota, Techs will always have a job. You can make the most reliable vehicles, but with electronics and such in today's automobiles, you will always have failures even in new vehicles.
