Well, what do you want to do with it? 05+ is better for comfort, but there is an advantage with the narrower 04- for offroaders.

For 05+, the auto tranny is the one to get. Refined and smooth. The ease of control offroad is a large bonus. If memory serves, also gets better MPG by a bit. Manual has somewhat lower gearing for offroad advantage, but isn't enough for me to second guess autos. For on-road travel though, manual feels like driving a semi and is arduous.

For 04-, the manual tranny is everything I could hope to love.

05+ DC LB Taco footprint is basically a Tundra with a small engine. Lots of truck to maneuver. If you really need that much haul, you would prefer the Tundra.

TRD OR package is good to look for on anything 09+ due to the ATRAC and locker, but otherwise not totally necessity. 08- you can take an up-front savings with non-TRD, then go aftermarket on ARB air locker, etc. Unless you are dead-set on the looks, I'm not convinced the Sport gives much functional advantage other than the TRD seats (also offered in OR pkg.), which are amazing.

Like you, I started out thinking I needed a LB and manual no matter what.
Test driving made me go auto
Test driving with friends in the back made me go DC... plus I can fit my stereo stuff
Looking at a DC LB made me go SB... which was a good choice, not only offroad but I really don't haul all that stuff I mentally thought I was going to

After purchasing...
Trees, pinstripes, and narrow paths make me wish for 04-
Camping makes me wish I had gone 4Runner so I could sleep in the back!! Someday I might be getting a camper top as a compromise!

LB is an absolute, I do a bit of ATVing, mostly in the Oregon dunes so that is also one of the major reasons I would like the TRD package. LB for 2 reasons, #1 I can fit my ATV back there with the gate up and #2 I can sleep back there while in the dunes.

I have not ruled out the autos but if i do find one I would really like it to have the towing package for the tranny cooler and class 4 hitch. my understanding is that the manuals do not need any tranny cooler?

I am not too worried about passengers in the back. Right not its just my GF and I. If someone wants to complain about the back seats they can walk. I am not too worried about the width as again, I have the ATV for off road adventures

towing package is mostly for future needs

 

thanks for the help but a LB is an absolute and most of these are far outside of my price range, $15k is the absolute highest I can go and I dont see talking any of these down to 15. last one is a pre runner

but i do appreciate the help. The more I am looking the more I am thinking i will have to go 1st gen

Looking back, I would have stuck with my original plan to get an AC/LB, but still would have gotten the Sport. (still want to re-gear and put lockers front and back )

How I spent my day:


Been logging a neighbor's place for the past few weeks for saw logs. Now we started logging part of our place for poles. Several times the length and a couple times the weight, at least, as the saw logs. I thought some of the winching I done with the truck was work. Been using 70ft. of 3/4" cable, 150ft. 5/16" extension, chokers, and that stupid heavy snatch block. Beer tastes so much better at the end of the day lol.

 

The factory towing pkg includes bigger battery (I think?), bigger alternator, and cooler, which are all good.

I don't think it matters what transmission you get. Some guy on the FJC forums created his own trans temp module and noted that the transmission on the FJC (which is basically the same vehicle as us) runs pretty hot and the cooler is a benefit even in everyday scenarios. You can always get one aftermarket I think, I'm not sure if they make bigger ones.

If you are using the ATV for your offroad purposes, why do you need 4x4? 2WD would be fine. If you need that 'just a bit more', get the Prerunner that has the locker and call it good. Don't let ego get in the way of economics and true functional needs. Consider 4x4 costs more in all aspects, including future maintenance.
If it's simply a dune vehicle every now and then, consider my mechanic, who desert races semi-pro with an FJC, removed his 4x4.



Go 4x4 if you want to go offroad with it, otherwise you will be much happier having saved with 2WD.

If $15k is your limit and you don't find something mechanically sound or doesn't check out for some reason, you are possibly trying to stretch your dollar too much. Sit back and save more. If you are bereft of vehicles and need this as basic transportation... maybe you need to buy basic transportation and wait on the truck. Worst is to buy over your head or settle on something that was a doomed purchase.

 

to get out into the dunes, it is cheaper and I find more enjoyment if i am camping out in the sand. I also snowboard so for the winter season it would be nice as well

You can do both of those pretty easy with 2WD still.
I lived in K Falls for about 4 years with a friend who drove an '82, and we had snow each year. It got us to class and through the passes just fine - one of those passes took us right past the entrance to Willamette Pass parking lot. I wouldn't dream of taking it through anything real thick, but a Subaru never showed us up. We never had anything but cheap street tires and I can't remember if the chains ever came out of the bag.
Unless you are getting way out in the dunes with the truck to park it, I think it's going to be easy with a good set of AT's - maybe Zach can chime in more here. At Sand Lake it was nothing serious to get to the camping.

 

I do get out there a ways, and sand lake is all of a few miles long total not the miles and miles of oregon dunes. Sand is different as well, Moses lake is super course sand, much harder packed, I could get through it with my civic if I wanted to, Sand lakes is softer but Oregon is the softest of all with very fine grain. I have seen a lot of 2wd rigs get stuck out there and granted I know what I am doing more than a lot of the weekend tourists down there I still would like to not have to worry about it especially if I am towing a trailer out onto the sand later in life

 

Well, if you want a 4x4 in the year, make, and model you want you will have to fork up more money.

 

I really want to hit sand lake never been.

 

its pretty small and to be honest rather boring, no good hills like coos bay or winchester. if you want good dunes go to south west oregon. Even if you are not a rider there are more interesting things to see down in coos bay area.
