When I asked, the dealer said around 240 lbs. That seems a little high, but I have nothing to compare it to other than my friend had Leer 100R on his Chevy S-10. He had a 6ft bed and the two us could easily enough carry the thing off the truck onto his sawhorses.

Another buddy had a full size truck and his topper was heavy for two people. Having a third was very helpful.

Maybe someone else has more accurate weights.

hi all, i am hoping to buy a used 2005 or 2006 prerunner access cab soon and am going to need a shell for it. i can't afford a new one, so i have been keeping my eyes open for a used one. might be putting the cart before the horse, but i may have found one, i just need to know if it will fit. can someone do me a favor and tell me the width and length of the bed? also, are the measurements taken from outside the bed or inside? i haven't had much luck in finding a width dimension and have read different lengths (some say 6 ft, some 6 1/2 ft?), and the shell i found is "measured from the inside wall to wall, 77" long 67" wide, give or take an inch". it came off of a T100. obviously it would be best to have the actual truck there to fit it on, but i can't do that quite yet and if it fits, this shell would suit my needs and is in my price range. thanks for your help!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it won't fit.

The short beds are 5ft, long beds (for DC LB's and access cabs) are 6ft.

Not to mention you need to tie into the factory tie down rail system instead of C-like clamps to go under the bed rails.

ok, so i really need to look for one that is specifically for 2005+ tacomas. i know they have a rail system, but didn't realize that negates the ability to use clamps. thanks!

It pretty much does, but I'm certain if you went to a place that sells and installs them they'd sell you the parts. The place I got mine from had a whole bucket full of rail inserts for the bolts. It's just a block of aluminum that has been milled to fit in the slot of the rail.

I have had two Lears, and have been very happy. My last Lear had the Thule artificial raingutters installed for the rack bars. I carry kayaks. I still have these rack bars, let me know if you are interested. The Lears fit, paint and seal were great.
I also had a Jerico and it sucked, Leaky, squeaky, and just not made well.
Coincidently I have a Jason cap on order for my new 09 Taco. I really wanted a aluminum but with the price of aluminum these days, I went with another fiberglass. Our local Lear dealer went belly up, so instead of traveling a long ways, I opted to buy the Jason locally. Good Luck.

can i ask why you prefer aluminum over fiberglass? also, how does the jason compare with leer or snugtop? those seem to be the most popular, i guess ARE is popular, too.

In my area (Baltimore Metro) ARE and Leer are most popular brands for what it's worth.

been browsing through this thread and all the shells look great...almost makes me wish i went with a shell vs. a hard cover...but I travel alot back and forth to home or where ever im stationed and I like to be able to leave stuff locked in there where no one can see whats in there....what do the bed rugs run ...Im really considering one after seeing some of the pics

I have had a couple aluminums in the past. Its improbable to get a color match aluminum unless you have a basic colored truck i:e black. The aluminums are light and easy to remove. One dude can do it, unlike a fiberglass.
Indeed ARE is a good quality cap. Dont know much about the Snug top. Stand by for info onn the Jason.
I took a piece of 5/8" plywood and cut it down to fit between the wheel wells, I covered it with carpet from the local rug store. I slide it in and out when camping works great. A cheap alternative for a bed rug.
    Good luck!
