my new Tacoma comes with "free" dealer supplied oil & filter each 5K miles until 25K

It's not gonna happen. I bet those oil jockeys at the dealership don't even torque the pan bolt...and probably forget or reuse the crush washer.

I already changed over to syn at 1335 miles.

It's just too easy to do myself. And the dealership hassle is not worth the time or dollars.

You are requesting synthetic and that is not covered under the free oil change deal from what I have heard. This is why they are trying to charge you for it.

Also all dealers have grease monkeys that just do oil changes, this means low paid inexperienced tech. They are the same as jiffy lube or any other place they have to do this to be competitive.

Real techs mainly change oil when it is on a repair ticket with other work.

    Your truck will be fine.

I'd still push for a resolution, but your truck should be just fine. You said that the level was just above the "low" level; as long as it's in the range between low and high you're alright. Go back and read the fine print in your oil change agreement and see if synthetic oil is included or if it's extra. You'd think it would be included because it's what your truck's manual calls for, but who knows. Better to fight your fight armed with all the facts and fully educated on the terms. Good luck, and keep us posted!

It should include it if that's what comes in your vehicle from the factory! The 2.7L comes with 0w20 synthetic, so that's what the dealer should put in for free.

I'm with the guys who say "fu-k" the dealer....!!! I bot my truck and thru in the 4 "free oil changes"...OK... I tried it... I checkedthe oil after the change... Really high (over filled).... I inquired.... "don't worry, the oil is measured and you got the right amount".............OK... I gotill next change....same thing...now I'm thinking..(why put marks on the dip stick if it din't mean nothing)....

Talk to them again after a fresh change (over-filled).... They said we'll drain some if you want, but it's Ok, don't wory.....

I then thought...I'll do it myself and put in EXACTLY what the manual says.... guess what.... The dip stick was right on the mark....

I'll NEVER take my truck to those F---ers again....!!

    Resolution

So, I had until 4:15 to get to the dealership in town for an oil change, but they were going to charge me the $60whatever to do it and then I could try to get reimbursed from the original dealership that screwed it up. I wasn't keen on this, so I called original dealership and had to leave a message for the service manager stating I would prefer him call the local place and authorize it so I wouldn't have to pay, mentioned I really needed to get there by 4:15 at the latest to get squeezed in.

He called at 4:14  and said that while the oil level may be incorrect, there's no way that the wrong oil was used because of the drop cords the techs use being connected to the bulk oil supply, and they read the cap before adding any oil. That's stupid, cords can get mixed up and since they have bulk 5w30 there it's entirely possible to use the wrong oil. He claimed that it must have simply been typed in wrong on the invoice and that I could bring it back to them on Monday. I said I'd prefer not drive it so far low and he suggested I buy a quart at a local auto parts store  . Then reiterated that I'd prefer have it done locally now, and that I had missed my window of opportunity to have them do it today, but he said if I chose that route that they would go ahead and pay the local dealership for it so I wouldn't have to.

Called local dealership, asked if I could just get the parts since it was too late for service and they said sure. Walked in and started to explain what I needed and why (person I talked to on the phone had just left, guy I was speaking with didn't know about the situation) and he took one look at the invoice and laughed, saying yeah your truck takes 6.1 qts of 0w20 every 5,000 miles. I also mentioned how if I hadn't of known better they would have had me take the truck to 10k on that oil change. He shook his head and agreed that it's likely several others had been duped.

Anyway, got 7 quarts of 0w20, new filter, new gasket for drain plug. Changed it right when I got home and have an unopened quart now since I was comfortable just putting 6 in  Thankfully the other dealership service manager called local one at 4:58pm so the parts were free. I was informed that I can't just get the parts every time, and while that's a drag, I do trust the closer one to do work from now on since the guy that helped me was aware of what my truck required and when.

Still skeptical that the other dealership didn't use 5w30, and it just so happens that I had an unopened oil sample kit from Blackstone, filled it up mid-stream and will send it off to them should I have any more doubt. The oil went in to a fresh container and was sealed so in the event that I do send it off, the offending dealership can do an analysis with the remainder should there be conflicting results. The entire process was filmed and documented, toyota corporate has documented this, so I should be in the clear.

Sound crazy? Yeah, I've never owned a brand new vehicle nor had over 20k debt, so I'll do whatever I can to keep it running perfectly and all services fully documented.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions, Steve104x4, dunno what the fuck you hoped to accomplish in your post but as long as you feel better...

I've never seen so much paranoia in one thread.

While I agree the oil was wrong type and level. The only smart thing to do is Always check the invoice and what was done BEFORE you leave the dealer or ANY other shop. If it isn't correct have them correct it then and there.

Eh, shoulda but I had to go to work. The service adviser I had worked with before found me at the parts window and asked me if "We good?" as one of his closing lines to which I replied "as long as the right oil was put in". He assured me it was. Paranoid? Maybe, but I think I was more pissed than paranoid knowing that the clean slate I paid over $20k for was tarnished after 4600 miles.

OP, you drive 140 miles round trip to get your oil changed? That's at least 18 $ in fuel to do that trip. That oil change isn't free. It costs you time, fuel, and the interest on the loan you took out to be 20k in debt. Ever heard of the saying there is no such thing as a free lunch? Free oil changes are just a gimmick to persuading you to buy that truck. Over the course of your free oil changes the dealer has only spent around 500 dollars if you take advantage of every single one. Reading your post it sounds to me you are more pissed at yourself for now having a monthly payment than at the dealer for maybe putting in an oil that probably will have no effect on the life span of your truck. Just my opinion.

No, I work 70 miles away. I purchased the truck there because they had several regular cab 4x4 manuals to choose from (none of the few dealerships between where I live and work had any). It was pretty convenient to just pop in there since my office is all of 1 mile away, both when buying it and when I went for an oil change. I would never drive 140 miles round trip specifically for an oil change, even if gas was free.

And nah, I'm not exceptionally bummed about the car payment as that's a given when buying a new car? Not sure how you pulled that out as the huge gripe here. The free oil changes is a plus when you drive as much as I do, what's wrong with trying to cut down on other expenses when you've just gained one? I also don't have as much time (mainly daylight) as I used to for these things.

I know a lot of people have just accepted that dealerships tend to be... moronic. I decided to give the whole free oil change deal the benefit of the doubt and I didn't just shrug it off because, well, that's horse shit. If you don't speak your mind you're just enabling them to screw over countless others (which will happen anyway). Shit, if all that changes is that one service adviser taking an extra 2 seconds to put his iPad to good use and tell people the proper oil change intervals then it was worth it. There is such a thing as a free lunch, and this dealership actually gives you free meals while you wait lol. If they would have done the job correctly I'd say that's a pretty fucking nice deal, saving me time and money in two ways.

Without filter maybe, 6.1 with filter change. If it reads high I guess you could blame the dip stick which most people agree sucks, or that figure being printed assuming an entirely empty new engine? Who knows. I've read that a lot of people add less than 6 and have found a sweet spot where the dip stick will read perfectly full. Then I've read a lot of people who say do what the manual says and not think twice about it. 6 even was easier than 5.5 or 6.1

By the way, the tarnished thing seemed to be coming off incorrectly. I just wanted to do everything on time and by the book for my new vehicle. Regardless of effect (or lack there of), this event interfered with that. That's it.

OP, not to be an asshole, but if u say that you do your oil changes yourself, then, why not just do what i do, buy toyota 0w20 in a 12 bottle case and buy two oil filters at a time?? (in my case, 5w30, but i used to buy 0w20 in cases when i had my 2010 toyota corolla xrs) the price for everything is a modest approx $40.00 (slightly more for me b/c i used the TRD oil filter) and you'll have enough oil for 2 oil changes.. so its about $20.00 an oil change ... just saying lol  and i know the guys who do the oil changes in the express section suck, i used to work in that department in a toyota dealership and hated the quality of work i was supposed to produce, as well as my co workers quality of work. so i told them to take that job and shove it. the only thing u should go to the dealer for is big jobs, like water pumps, power steering issues, electrical problems and stuff like that.. not BS oil changes and tire rotations lol. Sad part was, i was the only guy in the express section that knew what the oil change interval for the 2.7L tacos was. even tho EVERY OTHER vehicle that gets a 0w20 oil change is good for 10,000 miles, the 4 cylinder 2nd gen tacos still must get changed at 5,000 miles. idk what the actual reason is but all i know its that its gotta get done at 5,000 miles lol.. The only other Toyota vehical I ran into this same issue with was the sienna minivan that also shared the 2.7L taco engine it's base model that also ran 0w20 that had to be changed at 5,000 and not 10,000... I got so agrivated with my dealer for not doing the right thing that I used to bill out to the customer, or pay out of my own pocket, or out of my paycheck at the end of the week for an oil filter and 0w20 oil for the base tacos and siennas between the 10,000 mile services... Toyota wants that 0w20 oil changed in that 2.7 at 5,000 miles, like I said, idk the reasoning, but all I know is that it needed to be done to keep that vehical running right... also, most toyota dealers do no write 0w20 on the repair order/receipt, their computers are not programed to write 0w20 on those documents, so 5w30 is the default oil weight that goes on everyones repair orders or receipts, even tho the tech still may have put the correct weight in your truck, most ppl wouldnt know or even care to know lol, but since you're nit picky like me you do lol :D and for good reason.. but yeah.. take my suggestion as you will, it works great for me, and the way i see it, its pay me now or pay me later, so u might as well just buy the case of oil, a couple of filters, save some money there from buying in bulk alittle, and save some gas on the ride to the dealer... hope this helps, cheers!
