Engine/drivetrain, Made in Japan?

Anyone know whether the engine and/or tranny and/or transfer case on the 2005+ Tacomas (more specifically 2008) are made in Japan and shipped to US fully asembled?

 

By process of elimination, the engines must be assembled in Hamura, Japan, assuming Wikipedia is correct.

I toured the Fremont, CA Nummi plant a couple weeks ago and know the engines are not assembled there. They do fit some parts onto the engines like exhaust headers, hoses, but the core motors must come shipped from Japan.

I know the truck beds are assembled and painted in Tecate Mexico and major assembly is just 12 miles South of here in Fremont.

Quite a sight to see the plant. Bunch of truck luvin' , mostly dudes working on the assembly line. I'm sure some folks on this forum work at Nummi. btw, I could find every model and color of Tacoma even in only a small area of the employee lot, which is absolutely massive.
tons of Tacoma owners there, they get 'em for dealer invoice + destination.

I don't know what is assembled in Japan.

btw, if buying a new Tacoma, I'd track VIN to see if it's a Baja or Nummi assembly. IIRC, Nummi has been mfrg. pickups since 1991, then Tacomas.

 

I read on my sticker (08 model) the engine is U.S. made and the transmission is from Japan. I can scan it if you want. Also, the beds are made here in Paramount, CA at TABC (toyota auto body co.) IIRC

 

Mine is NUMMI. I checked my window sticker and couldn't find anything on mine referencing the location of manufacture of engine or tranny. Is there anything on the vehicle itself that will tell you if parts of the drivetrain are made in Japan or USA.

 

The sticker on that came off my truck said the engine and the tranny were USA. Auto tran.

 

My truck was assembled in Tijuana it said on a paper on the window I believe.

 

My late 07 was built in TJ. Sticker on window said engine and transmission were japanese, the rest north american.

 

I bought my 08 Tacoma 4x4 just recently and requested that I get one with the VIN# that started with a 5, as this shows it was assembled in the states. Trucks with a VIN# that started with a 3 were assembled in Mexico.
The reason I wanted a "5" is that I noticed that dealers were selling used Mexico Tacomas for a much less than US Tacomas. (We're talking apples to apples). I'm thinking that if I were a used truck shopper and did a CARFAX and saw that a truck was made in Mexico, I hesitate about buying it.
My dealer had no idea that there were two different VIN's and thought all Tacomas were assembled in the US.

 

To tell you the truth, I would have thought that they would get a better deal than that. I would have thought it would be something like cost + $500 or something, with a limit of one a year, or so.
