... ^^^ ... That "5 speed" on the column was crazy ...

But the craziest part was how close to the track those people were ... and some were in direct line with the roadway too. ...

One missed turn ... and spectators would knocked over like bowling pins ...

^That's rally for you. I think the high-level events have a thin rope separating the track from the spectator area...

Why would you want a five speed on your column??? Wouldnt you rather be able to have your hands on the shifter at all times so you can get faster downshifts and shift faster? Doesnt make sense to me man, Kinda stupid in my opinion.

    This.

Most of the modern rally cars have an inline shifter right next to the steering wheel, I don't even think they need to use the clutch most of the time, just bump forward for upgear, back for down ( imight have that reversed). This might be a vintage race or a class that does not allow that type of transmission.

yeah it's a sequential trans much like what you find on motorcycles. No clutch needed.

Actually, road rallys used to be very common around the country. I remember watching some when I was a little kid (my dad was into hot rods at the time). Sadly, the get-rich schemers, along with their lawsuit-hungry lawyers, ended that. Today, nobody in their right mind would be willing to accept the potential financial liability.
