Alright so my company has an opening in San Diego. 55-70k a year.

If I take it, I will be recently single and have no bills.

I'll have to bail on my gf, relocate (I live 20 min from Orlando, FL) and find an affordable apartment in a decent area.

Does this sound do-able? I haven't made up my mind yet I just want to know everyones input.

    Affordable ? lolz

expect 700+ for a room in san diego in a decent area , your tax is gonna be 10% on mostly everything and your 60k will turn into 40-45K after taxes

With that said , as much as I hate being in San Diego , I love going back to it on leave

Apartments here run about the same. It's just the taxes that are going to kill me

It's not really that close to 10. Sales tax is 7.75% for all of San Diego county. A search mentions Florida state sales tax is 6%. It's a little higher but not as much as you're implying.

The income tax ranges from 1% to 10.3% for the highest tax bracket (>$1,000,000). For $50K, it will work out to about 4.5% overall. At $70K it will be about 6%.

Here's a site where you can get some rudimentary information about how far your money will go comparing two cities.
    http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html

I'm not sure where Longwood is in Florida so I used Jacksonville. If you made $39K in Jacksonville Florida, you'd have to make $55K in San Diego to achieve the same standard of living.

If you made $50K in Florida, you'd need to make $70K in San Diego.

The biggest difference they site is housing costs (I believe it assumes you're owning a home).

any sort of housing in San Diego will cost more, guaranteed. You will be in for a big surprise if you move assuming they will be comparable.

If you are able to be guaranteed around 70k, I would look into it.

I've lived here since 1980. Never heard anything about it. I'd consider any gang in San Diego as gang-lite. LA is where the big boys play.

That said, it's a big city (over 2 million in San Diego county). There are bound to be bad spots.

there are gangs everywhere. every city has it's good and bad area's except if you planned to live in a city like Compton, it's all bad. i've been to San Diego several times they seem to have their act together. if you are really scared, apply for a CCW. Los Angeles is the only county in Commiefornia where it is nearly impossible for the average person to get one. Commiefornia is one of the few states who protect their criminals. if you plan to move to SD stay as far away from the mexican boarder as possible, that's where the bad is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNi3j9LE-oM

I have lived in several places in the country, including Gulf Shores, Al (kinda near you) I always come back to San Diego. Its a great place to live, comes with a price but well worth it. Key thing is to getting the right part of town when you move. Like anywhere there are shitholes and armpits in town, gotta avoid that. There are certain areas that are definately a melting pot of race, religion and sexual preference, if you are into that then go there if you are not, well, avoid it. Definately look closely and ask questions to people on here that know the town, it will make the relocation much easier. Personally, I live in Poway, its a great part of the county but comes with a little more of a price tag. For the money they are offering you should be fine as long as you dont have kids in tow, child support or alimony draining on your fianances.

The gang was most likely Syndo Mob. They've been operating since the 1980's in Southeast San Diego.

Also, the population of San Diego County is 3,095,313 according to the 2010 census.

San Diego is a great place to live with easy access to beaches, mountains, and deserts. I only wish housing was cheaper, if you search you can find good opportunities.

Not true. There are less than 750 CCW permits issued in San Diego County. They are not impossible to get but they are out of reach for the average citizen.

For accurate information on CCW in California and all 58 counties in the state please visit this resource http://www.calgunsfoundation.org/resources/ccw-initiative.html

CCW's are extremely difficult to get anywhere in California. This mentality is one of the bad parts about the state. The bleeding heart liberals that run the show and call the shots are the biggest issue the state faces and are the reasons why California is leading the way right into the shitter.

    Nice weather tho:D

Took 3 years to acquire a CCW, way too many hurdles. Weather oh ya, been here all my life, traveled all over the world and the country and can't imagine being any other place. As Tyler stated just have to pick where you go in the city/county. I live near the Stadium, we have issues near our neighborhood, but not too many in it. Rent can be outrageous but then again it is SoCal.

It depends on what part of the state you live in.

    Tyler,

Not true either. CCW permits are issued by one of the 58 county Sheriff's departments. You must apply to the sheriff in which county you reside. Each Sheriff/County sets it's own criteria for issuance. Some Counties are more liberal or conservative than others. For example, if you live in Riverside County you can easily get a CCW permit simply using "self defense" as a reason. Any non-prohibited person can get one there. Sheriff Gore in San Diego County does not feel the same way and sets the bar higher. Look at the link I posted above for more info.
