Hello all. I am going to be starting my own food trailer business. Using the post here I checked my 06 V6 Taco for the oil cooler, transmission cooler, etc., and it appears it does not have the tow package, just the class III hitch. My questions are:

    • Has anyone here ever priced it? (A LOT is not an answer :p I am sure it is high)
    • Is this something that can be done outside the dealer, or is there a gear ratio issue? Can any mechanic shop do it so I do not get raped by the dealer shop cost?
    • Should I sell the Taco and get a Tundra? (I did read on the forum here that the Tundra is around 6800, not much more than 6500) I am a loyal Toyota owner.
I read the Towing Bible on here, great stuff. I really love my Taco, and believe it will pull my trailer with the tow package. Thet trailer has brakes, and I know I need the controller too.

You gusy never steer me wrong. Not sure what to do?

dont go to the dealer to expensive.

other than what you mentioned there is also the larger alternator i believe (or a battery cant remeber off the top of my head)

as for tundra vs tacoma it really depends on how heavy the trailer is vs how far your going to be driving/towing it around. Is it going to be a once a week event bring the trailer kind of thing somehwere in town and its within the towing capacity. Or are you going to be towing every single day with close to the max towing capacity of the tacoma.

as for the price cant really tell you. If your going to need the oil, trans cooler, alternator, brake controller, and labour, it may get up there depending on where you go. Mabe $500 to $1000. I paid 500 for a hitch and wiring harness when i didnt know anybetter, plus the place i went were bastards, so with that being said....

adding the hitch reciever is no bigggie...any shop, even U-haul can do it for you.

it's all the other goodies that come with the factory tow package that will kill your wallet.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
All you really need to do is install the tow lighting wiring harness and a hitch. The hitch is an easy DIY job, took me 30 minutes, but I would steer clear of the wiring portion. I had someone else do that for me. I didn't feel the need for a bigger battery or alternator. I tow with a 4 cylinder and towed 2580lbs across the country and back without any troubles.

    or...

you could just trade in that '06 for a new 2012 or 2013 with the factory tow package, and enjoy a brand new truck to go along with it. :D

Doesn't the ECU also shift faster and hold gears longer? Can the dealer flash it to do this?

Thanks everyone. I think my truck will pull my concession trailer. Just for spits, I called the big Taco dealer here in town who has been in business 35 years just to get a price. They had never done and seemed really gun shy.

you should just be able to buy the wiring harness, it is plug and play. that is what my truck has. there is a plug in the driver kick/sill area that i believe has four wires for trailer lights. it should tie into the underhood fuse block.

but yea p-o apparently put on the toyota reciever, bought the toyota wiring and called it good. works for me
