WileyC, do you have a link to the US embassy issuing an apology, because that's the exact opposite of what I've heard on the news. I'd like to see that.

 

Why wouldn't he be? It's an unnecessary loss of life.

I just read to that no Marines were guarding the embassy at the time so that explains a lot. From CNN.....

Security outside embassies is the responsibility of the host country, and it's "entirely possible" that U.S. officials asked for but didn't receive help to push back the attackers that ultimately killed Stevens and the other staffers, said Fred Burton, a Stratfor analyst and former State Department counterterrorism agent.
"The question will be, once the dominoes fell in Cairo and protests started to occur, what was requested and what was done," he said.
No U.S. Marines were guarding the consulate at the time of the attack, according to U.S. officials. But that is not necessarily unusual, Burton said.
"Having the Marines can be viewed as politically sensitive at times," Burton said.
It can also raise the profile of an installation and invite unwanted attention or attacks, he said.

 

but with all the recent unrest, wouldn't the protection of the embassy by Marines have been the priority?

 

Yeah you would think so. Maybe they and by "they" I mean politicians, will rethink security policy. Its the middle east for fux sake. Cant take enough security measures.

 

That article says that a republican congressman stated that the attack has the hallmark of al-queda, and then in the next paragraph it says the pentagon and state department are discussing whether it may have been coordinated.
The same article then says that its up to the host country to protect the embassy.
The article linked at the end of that one said that there was a mob of several thousand angry people with machine guns and RPG that marched into the consulate, which was in a temporary location with less security than desired. The same article went on to say that as a result of the civil war a unusually high number of people had guns and heavier weapons.

It sounds like you may enjoy this fake news editorial. I read it when it was current, but it stuck with me enough that I still remember it. Its from eleven years ago, but check it out. It seems relevant, if one were to substitute the embassy attacks for 9/11/01.
