That is why I simply said if you plan on offroading it, you might want to stay away from the intake because it is exposed right behind the grill. If it was a mall crawler, like mine, or an x-runner, I would have said get the URD and have some fun. But why risk it?

It all depends on the off roading. IIRC, URD has a cover to place over the filter so as to keep more dust out.

FYI, my experience with the Afe SI was the same. Same results too, back to stock, and now have a URD+Maf waititng to be installed.

Do note though that intake noise and exhaust noise are very subjective. What works for one, doesn't for another and vice-versa. Everyone has their own sense of style, and ears in this case. "Everyone" said that the TRD exhaust is mellow and non-intrusive. I tried one and removed it within 2 weeks. Personally I have little tolerance for resonance (wife has ZERO tolerance), and I had resonance in the 2500rpm range, back to stock on that one to. Thinking about a Dynomax or an Aeroturbine, but haven't pulled that trigger yet.

Same as what wolfpack and lurkin said. The resonance inside the cab is horrible imo. Which is why I'm going to the gen2 intake. Definitely not putting on an exhaust either. Had an exhaust on my 06 Taco and the drone was bad.

Unfortunately lurkin, that aero is going to be just as bad.

I can't wait to make this switch tomorrow.. if I don't throw any codes, I'll be keeping it and will post results

Yeah. Same thing basically. The xl will be a little less raspy.. but its still gonna drone like any exhaust.

Well, just replaced my AFE Stage 2 with the Gen2 TRD intake. I already love it. Not nearly as loud, bit still a nice growl when accelerating. At WOT it Isnt as raspy nor does it have the resonance that the AFE had. I also feel (by butt dyno) that it has more torque and pulls harder. I'll keep an eye on it for CEL's , but so far so good. I'm definitely a lot happier with the TRD than the AFE.

So I know this thread is pretty dead anyways but, if i was what to get a CAI what would you suggest? Im sort of leaning towards an airaid. Hows filtration compared to stock? Im in NE ohio so NO desert dust, mostly rainy, cloudy, snowy. any thoughts are appreciated

I had the airaid on my 06.. it was ok. It was the one that just replaced the primary filter.. but kept the stock seconday.. it still isn't better than a sealed intake tho..

Honestly tho.. after having that one, then the AFE stage 2.. and now the gen2 TRD.. I would recommend the TRD intakes (1st or 2nd) or the afe stage 2 Si.. OR.. just stay stock. If you really want an intake. Make sure its sealed. I love my gen2 TRD intake and so glad I made the switch.

Also, flat filters are going to be quieter than cone filters. Sealed will be quieter AND breath colder air than open intakes with just a heat shield.

1st gen TRD intakes are cone filtered, 2nd gen TRD is flat filtered. Both are sealed and use the stock fender opening to draw in cool air.

    Hope this helps.

I actually picked it up from a friend/member here. It threw codes on his, So he switched it out for a 1st gen trd.. and sold me it for $150. A great deal! I would still recommend it at full price tho. Keep an eye out In the fs section and online.

Yea the more I look into it the more I'm finalizing the TRD. Ohio is way too wet to run a URD. Since my truck is new it is a little more reassuring to get a TRD. Although they haven't officially released a 2012 TRD CAI. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it.

I bought a 2013 Tacoma TRD 4.0 and they do not have any CAI availible yet. I did some research and decided to go with an Airaid. Had to get one for a 2012. The install is almost Identical except for the air pump connection. The 2012 harness has 2 wires the 2013 has four you will need to splice in 2 extra wire harness extensions, its too easy. I am a new member so if I am beating a dead horse i apologize, just throwing this out there for any new 2013 Tacoma owners looking for an option.

Installed the CAI and a 13" wicked flow to replace stock muffler.
-noticed more throttle response, faster acceleration
-MPG: 17.79 to 18.25 average change (keep in mind this motor only has 2000 miles)

I'm debating on the Airaid since the TRD for 2012+ won't be available until next year at the earliest (per regular phone calls to TRD). Another member here states that the Airaid "squeals" on his 2012 at speeds over 60 mph. Please advise if you have the same experience.

I had the TRD CAI on my 4Runner. It made my truck noisier and sucked more gas. That's it. I went from 17mpg down to mid 15s.

The only good thing about it was that it looked cool (red) when you opened the hood.

I won't be wasting my money on one of those again.

The Airaid intake does have a mild "turbo whistle" to it. I only notice it when the engine is under load ie fast acceleration. If you are looking for maximum performance and adding more power this intake will help some. As for MPG's hard to tell with the motor not broken in but as of yesterday I gained 2mpg. (Allowed for 2 weeks to access mpg improvement) That is with both the CAI and a muffler swap. which cost $420. So if mpg is your only motivation to install save your dollars. Hope this helps out.

Been meaning to post for about a week now regarding the TRD CAI for 2012 and the news is not good. I go to SEMA every year for work and made a point of stopping by the TRD van and grilling them about the CAI. Talked to a TRD Exec for about 15 minutes and they said that they will most likely be pulling the plug on this project. They mentioned that there will be a new truck release and with only a 2 year window for the CAI that tooling up really does not make a lot of sense (understandable). They also have to get the harness approved by Japan for OEM warranty issues. They said they are trying but those 2 reasons make it a long shot. They Exec gave me their direct info and said they should have a final answer in the next 4-6 weeks but that the project was most likely going to be killed. I will update again when I have their final word on the matter.
