Yep you are correct. Toyota's diesels don't meet our VERY strict diesel regulations.

CAT doesn't even produce Diesels anymore for US i guess according to my dad. Its also why we don't have any of the nice fuel efficient diesels that Europe and the rest of the world has now.

We just have really really REALLY strict Diesell regulations i guess to the point its hard to make them even run. Thats why my dad said CAT stopped.

Haha gotta love our EPA... They don't seem to realize that if the rest of the world doesn't follow the same guidelines it doesn't make the impact they think it does. Not that I agree with them either.

The DIY diesel toys kit is ~13k if you want to install it on your own (and not have to ship your truck).

Whats the Hilux size of diesel? Anyone remember the old GM converts in the 80's? My uncle had a buick that was a gas-diesel conversion, biggest piece of crap that thing was with 2 batteries and a starter that costed $600 to replace every so often LOL Anyways I doubt you could convert they probably run a inline motor.

it comes down to how much work you want to do yourself. we did a 4bt swap for around 3k iirc. the most expensive part was the adapter plate and the used engine. bunch of hours wiring it up (the truck not the acutal engine) and some other loose ends and you are good. now if you live in cali you will have all kinds of other issues lol

Both the 1KZ-TE and 1KD-FTV are 3.0TD. The KD engine is the newer generation so it produces more power and is more efficient.

Priceless. I was actually amazed at how many threads there are about this topic. Essentially:
Yes, it would be sick to have a diesel Tacoma.
No, it won't happen without 12-25 grand, a hookup, or an extremely large amount of luck.

    ^^Agreed on the music.

The price is high, definitely too high for me. But if I suddenly had a mid 5-figure windfall (say, rich long lost uncle died or won the lotto), then I think I would do the conversion because the general badassery of having (probably) the only diesel Tacoma a) in the area and b) on TW would be awesome. Besides, then I would be able to poo poo all these diesel threads that keep showing up.

okay. so due to the price. the diesel swap idea is gone. so what would be the cheapest way to SAFELY increase power for my 2.7liter. my 03 taco is completely stock. and i plan on maybe lifting about 2 or 3 inches and putting 33 inch tires on it. im just worried that with the larger tires and the lift, my truck will not have enough power.

You might be able to find a 4BT cummins used on craigslist. But it will take a lot of fabrication to get everything to work right in our trucks. But if you did it you would have one of the sickest yotas on the block. Thats forsure.

    1. Deckplate mod.
    2. There are turbo kits available, but I don't have any experience with them so I can't relate.
    3. Sell the truck, get a V6. That's what I did when I figured out the old 3VZ wasn't giving me enough (except it got recalled not sold privately)
    4. If all else fails, regear. It'll help turn the tires easier.

If you just want to run larger tires..regear to 4.88s

    problem solved.

Just saw this thread when i was searching about diesel conversions. i got a 2003 2.7L also with a 3 inch lift and basically 33s(metric). i haven't regeared yet, but the power isn't bad for rock crawling and normal driving, sure it would be nice to have more power, but once i regear to 4.88 i think it will be fine.
I know to fit a cummins 4BT you need a 2" body lift to clear the bell housing and getting everything to fit and work right is a pain in the ass and expensive, but i saw a guy on youtube who put one in a 2002 ext. cab

You know how I did my swap? I wasn't a retard. There's literally no way to spoon feed a custom swap like this to anyone.
That's really more directed at the OP and all the other hundred million threads like this.
