I originally posted this to an old thread but realized it may never be seen...

I have a squeak that is diagnosed as the throuwout bearing. Toyota is replacing the throwout bearing and slave cylinder under warranty but are charging me for the pressure plate and clutch disk($512). My knowledge of trucks is limited to being able to change a tire and my oil.

Is it necessary to replace the pressure plate and clutch disk? Isn't that just replacing the "clutch"? I've driven manuals for 20 years and I know what a worn clutch feels like and this isn't it. Aren't the other two part of the transmission? I just don't want to get screwed...being female is always intimidating when it come to repairs!

    Thanks!

Might as well replace even if not needed yet, it will be to your benefit in the long run. I would not drop the trans just to replace a bearing.

You will have a whole new setup for the price of the clutch and P.P. It's
free labor ( mostly ) for the job. If the clutch were to wear out in 2 years lets say, you would have to pay labor to do this whole job again. Start new and then you have a warr. on everything inside the bell housing. The clutch splines onto the input shaft on the front outside of the trans and the Pressure plate bolts to the flywheel. They are not part of the trans.
I don't think you give yourself enough credit. I know lots of men that can't change a tire or oil.
Just ask questions if your not sure.

$512 is kind'a pricey, I suggest going to the dealership's website and see if they have some kind of discount coupon for parts.

Thanks for the replies (and props for changing my own oil...I couldn't believe how easy it is)!

I decided to only do the warranty work. When I went in to talk about it in more detail and when I asked how badly my clutch was worn they said they didn't know b/c they didn't actually look at it. But they have to know now if I want it replaced b/c they have to order the parts.

I asked when they typically see Tacoma's for new clutch and he said 90,000 to 120,000. I have just under 80,000. I get that in the long run it would save me $$ but for now, there is nothing wrong with it and I don't have $500 laying around!

    Thanks again and happy trucking!
