I'm curious what you (or anyone) would think of the URD TO bearing sleeve and if that would fix the problem vs. replacing the bell housing or transmission.

i went thru three throw out bearings in my 07 tacoma six speed. they replaced it three times within 70 thousand miles. one time i had to pay 1500.00 bucks to get it fixed. funny thing i sold it and bought a 2011 jk wrangler 4 door. 35" tires. two total transmission replacements in less than 13000 miles. it was a 6 speed to. just sold it and went back to a 2012 tacoma this time im doing a automatic boy i hope it holds up better this time......
good luck on fixing your problem.

I have a 2008 certified pre owned with about 53k. Going in first thing in the morning with a printout of the TSB and see what they say. This chirping is so ghetto. I would probably be fine with it if I was driving a 95 or something, but this truck is three years old, come on! Hoping for a happy ending here. I will post my experience and dealer info as it develops. Anyone have any questions you want me to ask when I go in?

So, the Dealership called me yesterday to let me know that they are fixing the problem under warranty and that the Throw Out Bearing does have a Toyota Service Bulliten(TSB) regarding this matter. They're only replacing the TOB and the pressure plate though so I guess I'll have to wait and see how long it will take before the chirping comes back if at all. At least this issue will be resolved by the dealership for the life of the vehicle. THANK GOD.

Excellent thread. Thank you for all your information guys. I'll post pictures soon.

I didnt read the last 18 pages so forgive me if I cover something already covered.

Anyways, here in Canada we have a lemon law, where if the same part breaks on your vehicle 3 times, you can return the vehicle.

I don't know all the ins and outs, but I'd look into it, maybe you have something similar, and can get a new transmission completely?

    good luck

So, I just picked up my truck and everything looks and sounds great. The clutch even feels better. But, as I'm starting to back up into my driveway after getting home, I notice my backup camera isn't working. What the hell did they mess with for my back up camera not to work??? I tried turning the camera on from my main menu= nothing. I tried resetting the the whole system= nothing. Not sure what they did but now I have to go back to the dealership. I'v had the same issue with my 06 for a while. The dealer supposedly contacted the district rep who blew it off. I've done some research and i'm thinking of sending a complaint in to the NHTSB. A failure could result in some serious injuries. Obviously Toyota is aware of this problem.

There are three methods you can use to contact the NHTSA if you suspect a safety-related defect in your vehicle. You can take any (or all) of the following actions:
    • Call the U.S. Department of Transportation's Vehicle Safety Hotline: (888) 327-4236 or (800) 424-9153, toll free from anywhere in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
    • Report the issue online at the NHTSA's vehicle safety Web site: http://www.safercar.gov/
    • Send a letter via U.S. Mail: U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation (NVS-210) 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590
    [source: ODI]
If you file a complaint, there's a chance you may be contacted by an investigator from the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI). The ODI, an office within the NHTSA, conducts defect investigations to support the NHTSA's efforts. But that's not all it does. ODI investigators keep a close watch on manufacturers' recall operations, too.
If enough consumers file a report about the same issue with the same make, model and year of vehicle, the NHTSA may decide to open an investigation

Do you have some information on this? I have never heard of this law in Canada.

    Thanks

They had replaced the T.O. bearing during the TSB repair, so I don't think that's the problem. It's more of a growling noise than a chirp.

Mine sounds like a worn bearing in the transmission (not the same problem discussed in this thread) <-- just to be clear, for others reading. This is my problem if anyone is interested. There is a good discussion and pictures about how the 6 speed MT works, and what could have been damaged due to prev. owner flat towing the vehicle.

For what it's worth, even though I had the TSB repair done, I bought the UDM sleeve kit to install if I ever get the chirp or need to replace the clutch. They use the OEM T.O. bearing, and modify it by machining a grease groove on the inner race (maybe 2 grooves?), from what I understand. It's been awhile since I've looked at it. It's just sitting in the box right now.

I hadn't heard the noise until this vid (thanks!). I don't have the chirp you show in the video.

Hmmm... 111k miles and mine is still chirping... It's been chirping since the day I bought the truck 3 years ago with 42k miles. Originally, I said to myself that I would do the URD fix when it comes time to replace the clutch, but who knows when the clutch is going to wear out. Maybe I'll do this over the winter when I have more time.

I realize this is an old post and my question is probably answered in the previous replies...but I'm at work and short on time to read it all! I have a squeak that is diagnosed as the throughout bearing. Toyota is replacing the throwout bearing and slave cylinder under warranty but are charging me for the pressure plate and clutch disk($512). My knowledge of trucks is limited to being able to change a tire and my oil.

Is it necessary to replace the pressure plate and clutch disk? Isn't that just replacing the "clutch"? I've driven manuals for 20 years and I know what a worn clutch feels like and this isn't it. Aren't the other two part of the transmission? I just don't want to get screwed...being female is always intimidating when it come to repairs!

    Thanks!

I would (and did) have them change mine since they already have it a part anyways.
They should only charge you for the parts, no labour.

It depends on your milage, but even if it was relatively low, I would still have them do it.

    Shawn.

How about those with 5 speeds?
My 2010 has 41k on it and I am bringing it into my local dealer today.
It's a 2.7 l and when you slightly push in the clutch the noise goes away.

Just adding my issue to the chaos. I took my 2008 v-6, 6-speed into the dealer and they will replace the t/o bearing for free. They called me back after I left and want me to pay $225 for a new pressure plate. Isn't the bad t/o bearing the reason the pressure plate is messed up to begin with?

Also, they gave me a loaner vehicle, which is a 2013 Venza ($37,000) and I drove it ONE day to work today. I walk outside to go get lunch and the rear-right tire is completely flat. After I changed it, I noticed it had a gash in the inside tire-wall. They are also making me pay $310 to replace their loaner vehicle's tire.

All of this from our friends at Priority Toyota. Thanks Priority!!! I am now $535.00 in the hole for an engineering mistake.

Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations.

+1 on thanks for the great writeup by SnoBoarder, and
+1 on the vid that Jay238 posted - this confirms this problem for me on my 2002 Tacoma; my truck make same noise at idle.

Clutch pedal was maladjusted when I first got the truck, and once I set it properly, the chirp began.

It needed a new clutch, so I had it replaced at a local Toyota Dealership (June 2012) shortly after I bought the truck. I typically do this stuff, myself, but didn't have the time, and it was blistering hot here then, so I had to have it done.

Had them do the whole deal - pressure plate, disc, release bearing, pilot bearing, and flywheel resurface. I thought that the chirp was with one of the bearings at first, not really giving it much thought, since I knew they would both be replaced when I had the clutch done. But then the problme was still there after. I've been driving the whole time since then with the chirp and grumble/grindy/growl audible on slow take-off. Sounds like interference of some sort or something wobbling. I was thinking this whole time that they must not have replaced the release bearing, thinking I was going to have to take it back, but then did some more reading here on this post and now think it more likely that they did what they were supposed to do and that the problem is due to worn snoot.

Anyway, ordered the PDM Transmission Sleeve Kit - I got mine from Sumo Parts as URD didn't seem to have my application listed on their site (2002 Tacoma uses kit TSK46 as opposed to TSK45), and Sumo got back to me faster. Sumo apparently works very closely with PDM right out of Thornton, CO, though their address resolves to a home, according to Google Maps. Anyway, apparently these repair kits are used extensively in Subarus as well, hugely popular in CO.

Looking forward to getting this taken care of once and for all, and thankful I don't have to go back and go through the dealership hassle.

Here's a generic photo of the kit:
    Sleeve looks substantial.

dude, no way - I took my truck to Priority Toyota in Chesapeake. Same guys, different location. Yeah, fancy shop and showroom. a little too fancy if you ask me. I think they're too busy for their own good. the one here has had some pretty bad customer service reviews. I felt like I was just carted right through there. had to get the service guy to slow down a bit because I felt like he wasn't listening to me. It was a little better after that, but I don't like going there now. In the end, they had my truck for over a week, put 30 miles on it (? + not cool; I never authorized anyone to drive it home), and it's still not quite right. You would have thought they'd have known about this issue and mentioned it at the time. But whatever, I'll take it apart myself and get a proper look at things.

And yeah, I hear ya on the frustration of having to pay out for a design flaw. pretty ridiculous. there are some great things about the newer Toyota vehicles, but man, my old '87 doesn't give me these kinds of problems.

mine is a bit louder then that. When the clutch is engaged it goes away but at idle it chirps like a mofo.
