Want the look of muds, but...

Been looking at buying some mud tires , but are there any that last some what descent mileage on the street? Need advice please; problem is lot of tires no available in size that I need (17x9 MT wheel) Looking at 285x70x17's. Thanks in advance

 

I've had my Toyo MTs(285 75 R16s) for 5 years, and the truck has been driven as a DD and has been to TN and back a couple times. Still got a good amount of tread left. Don't really know the MPGs but they last.

 

Antother vote for Derpatracs. If they come in your size.

 

im glad to hear this................i love the tread on them. I have toyo open country at now and love them except for some minor rot on the edge. I run the piss out of em so they wont last 5 for me but I like them alot. I have been planning on doing the MTs when I go bigger.

 

I see you're from CT. Beware of running MT's in the winter unless they have good siping AND a soft compound. Improper MT tires in the winter can be extremely dangerous. About the only "MT type" tire out there right now that is "safe" for winter use is the Duratrac because it's a very soft rubber compound and it has long, deep sipes in it.

The Toyo M/T tires don't have very good sipes in them, and given their MFG-rated tread life expectancy (40k miles) they likely have a medium to hard rubber compound. Not a tire I'd suggest for winter.

 

Hercules Trail Diggers are available in the 285/70/17 size, load ranges D or E. Available as a 3 ply tire as well.

Been running on a lot of pavement with mine, got around 10K on my set now and have barely worn through 2-3/32nds of tread. Started at 19, was around 17 at the last oil change.

This is why i am going with an a/t, gatta consider trips up to vermont and a little snow wheeling. I used to have firestone destination a/t and they did really well in the snow, not very aggressive looking tho.

 

Nitto Trail Grapplers best tire i've ever owned.

 

The Hercules Trail Diggers are studdable to make winter driving a bit easier.

I would also vote for the DuraTrac in this case.

 

X2 but if your looking for good mpgs don't get a mud tire, I get 16 in town and 13 highway with these. They are quite for a off road tire though.

Lots of good advice, thanks. I like the looks of the Toyo's and the Duratracs. And I work real close to home so only be running about 12 miles per day most of the time. Appreciate the mpg advice on those mudders. Decisions...decisions. Never heard of the Hercs, but i'll check it out. Also was looking at the Firestone M/T; seems to have a lot of good reviews.

 

I think the toyo's are over-hyped, I would much prefer duratrac's or nitto's.

 

Had good luck with the Firestone Destination M/T. I replaced them with the Hercules Trail Digger because they were cheaper. Seem to be just as good.

KM2's are good tires. Hankook MT's as well.

 

I'm running both of these right now--I'm happy with both.

Loved the looks of my Toyo MTs, but they were overpriced and didn't wear as well as I had hoped.

 

I think the Hankook RT03's are a great compromise
between having a fairly aggressive tread and smooth road manners.
The lower purchase cost doesn't hurt neither
