If you are building it, then you should know what YOU want in it.

From what little I know of SSD hard-drives I'm not sure I'd (personally) waste my money on one...I am led to believe they really only boost your boot and load times with whatever you have loaded onto them, that being said, I generally start my CPU, grab coffee or beer (depending on the time of day) and let it do its thing in the meantime.

A fast hard drive (7200 rpm) can yeild a pretty quick machine. My laptop boots up only a little bit slower than my friends SSD laptop.

Don't get an SSD if you don't need one. They are (IMO) way overpriced and the price will gradually fall over the next year or so then you can upgrade.

You can build from the ground up with an i5 processor and 4 gigs of ram with money left over for a nice monitor (maybe 25" LED) and have peripherals as well (mouse, keyboard, etc) for your budget.

So I'm hearing dont blow my money on an SSD. What about video card and Processor? Those are my main hicups, I need to edit 2 hours of 1080P video.

I used to build my own, but even the cheap sites like newegg can't beat the package cost for an already-built machine anymore (unless you have the patience to wait for short-duration sales). I use my machine for basically the same purposes you stated, and this is what I have:

    HP i7 @ 3.6GHz
    10GB RAM
2TB drive (I have external drive space for long-term storage)
    Radeon HD 7570 graphics card
    BluRay Burner
    TV Tuner card
    Win7 Premium

I paid less than a grand six months ago (but I didn't buy a new monitor). If you prefer another brand, they'll have a similar package.

Do you edit 1080p video with your Radeon 7570?

Yes, I do. I have a GoPro Hero 2 that I use. I use CyberLink PowerDirector 10 to edit, which will even do 3D if I ever buy the rig and a second GoPro to film it.

Just built a system with parts ordered from Newegg for less than a grand out the door (no monitor as I already had a display).

My opinion on SSD drives are different than everyone elses apparently. Yes, they speed up boot times, but more importantly they speed the load times of intensive applications (PS, Premiere, After Effects, etc.). It's probably my favorite part of the system I just built.

Ivy Bridge vs. Sandy Bridge? Why NOT go with the new tech if you have the budget? They run cooler (especially if you plan on overclocking), but just make sure you get a newer MOBO with 22nm support. Lastly, don't forget a GPU as a lot of additional processing power can be shoved off onto them.

    System I just built:
MSI Mobo w/ usb3 and the 77 chipset
    16GB ram
    256 Samsung SSD
1 TB 7200 drive (additional storage in addition to my external drives)
    AMD 7770 GPU w 1GB DDR5
    case, dvdrw, memcard reader, etc...

If you have the experience in building one, get what you want and make it your own!

impressive, looks like gopro is 12mbps, and my video is 17mbps, but it will probably work the same. So what im learning is that processors are super powerful now and high end video cards are no longer needed.

So, sandy vs ivy, i5 vs i7, let hear it! Also how did you end up with 10 gigs of ram, most people get 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.

It normally came with 8GB, and they threw in 2GB as part of the deal. 8 would have been fine with me.

I don't see the reason unless you're into hardcore gaming....the "8" cores in an i7 seem to keep up with everything I need it to. That said...the MOBO I went with has 1 touch overclocking for those who want to mess around with it without worrying too much about the ins and outs.

I would go with an SDD if you're going to be video editing. It will help a lot.

So it looks like I want an i5 ivy bridge. Not sure if I want to spend the money to get an unlocked version or not.

ASUS Radeon HD 7870 just went on sale for 210, probably overkill, but it seems like a good deal.

Still wondering if I should go the SSD route, wish one would pop up on sale and make my decision easier.

Don't need to spend the money on the unlocked version. Overclocking has it's benefits but do you really need to ?

Any thoughts on reusing a 6 year old power supply? It was $100+ then, modular, super fancy but it is old now.

As long as it works and has all the accessories you need. Also I'd hit it with some dust off, nothing like turning on an old psu full of dust and it shorts out.
