Looking to buy a bug deflector/shield for my 2012. I see there are two kinds on eBay, factory and aftermarket.. Factory is $135 shipped and aftermarket's are between $50-$60. Is there that much difference between the two. Does the aftermarket fit as well as the factory shield/ Thx...

alot of guys dont like the factory one. it uses metal brackets that mount to your hood, and only has clear protective tape that can wear through. I like mine but doubled the tape up no problems yet. most guys like the avs one.

I've been seeing alot of deflector threads come up recently. I was never interested in one, but curiosity got the best of me. Do these things actually work considering the whole area of the windshield? I know some will get through but does it deflect enough to where it's worth it to get one? I live in FL and wanna see if it's worth it for me to get one once lovebug season come around.

Not really, they don't deflect bugs that great.........but they do protect your hood from rocks

I have an EGR and love it. It's pretty low profile and it actually ties my front end look together.

Be careful... 2011 and older will not fit the 2012/3.
A few eBay vendors have not discovered this yet.

I bought the AVS shield off of eBay for less than $60. Fits amazing and like others have said, does not touch the hood at all.

The newer style ones are NOT bug deflectors. They are rock chip protectors.

All they really do is keep rocks from chipping the paint on the first foot of the hood.

this is exactly what is wrong with them. it will wear through the tape and when it does the damage is large. Also if you hit it against anything larger then a bug the metal is forced into the paint.

IMO they are damage multipliers. I had one of for almost a year. It sent rocks into my glass and caused damage to my paint on my hood. Totally worthless IMO.

because it send them into the windshield. I would rather have chipped paint I can touch up instead of a cracked windshield I can't fix.

thanks guys for the info, I already have quite a few rock chips so the worry factor there is minimal for me. I just hate having to clean my windshield after a few days, it's more of a chore with a 3" lift haha.

I like that my 13 yr. old junk...
doesn't have the front of it's hood all sand blasted to hell.

If I take off the deflector... the hood looks as good as day one ;)

I have a factory deflector on my '07 4Runner (mounts the same as the factory deflector on my '12 Taco) and have not had any issues with the metal mounts rubbing through the tape/clear strips and damaging the hood. As long as it's mounted properly there are no issues with it rubbing through the tape/clear strips.
