285 only tells us the tire width, diameter is the more important factor. This would be the middle number in your tire size:

    IE: 285/X/17 or 265/X/16 - find X.

Why can't the people in here comprehend a simple sentence?

Do some research. I'm not stating a FACT. I said numerous times "it CAN happen".

I also stated I know pro's and then supplied links for what they said, but I guess you missed that as well.?

Do a search on here for more threads on this EXACT topic. Since OP didn't do a search you people are discussing the same topic that was discussed 100 other times on here. Maybe a little less BS and a little more research and you guys would understand I'm only trying to help you out. You want to do what you want then that's fine.

Agree with OutbackHack. If your spare is stock then it's 265/70R16, so the diameter is 781mm (265x70%x2+410). So if you solve in reverse (285xPx2+436=781) your current tires are the same diameter as your spare if they are 285/60R17. Even if it's not the exact same diameter, if it's close in size you should be able to get home but I wouldn't recommend driving too fast.

Thanks! Of course this would only be an emergency only situation, but just wanted to make sure I could actually use the spare until I get my full size tire and rim to replace it.

So what's your current tire size? 285/xxR17

When you get your full size spare are you going to rotate all 5 or just do the 4?

Interesting, didn't know the LSD would be sensitive enough to pick up such minor differences in tire circumference but it does kinda make sense as it would cause them to spin at a different rate.
Owner's Manual recommendation is attached below with no mention of spare; had this in an earlier post but it somehow got lost in the fray.

    No.

    I rarely rotate tires.

I prefer to rotate vehicles.

My spare is w/out TPMS so I check the tire pressure every couple months. Tire valve extender will be my next add...

At least once I have bought 3 matching tires and used it. I replaced the original spare with one of used tires. More often I have replaced spare to match tire size on truck. I did that once with 33s in the old style carrier. Fortunately I had a cable and lock on it. Every once in a while it would come out and scatter traffic behind me. Imagine a luxury car hitting a 33x12.5.

The LSD uses a clutch. It holds the axles together until its hold is broken by torque differences between wheels. IIRC, the torque is around 100 ft LBS. Running dissimilar tires provides plenty of torque, on dry pavement. The tires turn at different speeds.
On an open diff, the spider gears would constantly turn. It wouldn't be a problem at slow speeds, but may cause a problem at higher speeds. The speed of rotation may be to great for the lube to cling and protect it. That's why you can easily grenade a diff when doing donuts.

Nope. I do not rotate with the spare tire. If I did that I would have to take off the spare tire from the spare wheel (which is cheap-looking). If my spare wheel was the same as my alloy wheels, then yeah I would rotate with the spare tire.

At about 40k miles I got a flat in the rear-right. They couldn't plug it so I needed a new tire. Ran on the full size spare for about a week until the matching tire came in (Dunlop Grantrek AT20 - Sport Taco's factory tire). So I had them take off the spare tire from the spare wheel and put it on the actual wheel on the rear left, and replace the new tire on the rear-right. The old AT20 went onto the spare wheel.

285 is some combination of radius and width. The overall daimeter = ((285*.70*2)/25.4)+16. Or 31.7".

If I have a flat on the rear and have to travel a long distance I will put the spare on the front. Might be more trouble but could save you diff. I do not have to worry about it for a while since I just bought a new one. I sure wish Toyota would but 265/75s on the Baja. O well I guess I just have to wait for the 70s to wear out. If the tires I my trade had not been have worn I would have swapped.
