A lot of the problems people have with rain are due to lack of prep work. FRP doesn't seal the tent material, so it's important to use a waterproofing product on the whole thing. Also, the FRP rain fly is worthless... SLO Sail makes a really nice replacement fly for the Flippac.

I've never seen problems in high wind aside from the flapping. That can usually be fixed by aiming the back of the truck into the wind, but can be annoying. I agree, a hardsided camper is best in poor weather, but has its own set of problems to deal with. The flippac may not be the ultimate in comfort, but is a good mixture of comfort, ease of use, weight, and capability.

Yeah he did all the sealing and we were about as protected as we could be down in a canyon... Two separate trips, two fails. Sometimes the issue is simply a difference of opinion as to what bad weather is. On one of those trips another couple had the ARB RTT mounted on a little offroad trailer. It got packed up and they slept in the front of their jeep.

I'm sure both set-ups would have been wonderful in no wind no rain and 70 degree weather, it's just sometimes you get surprised and find yourself in the middle of it.

I'm simply pointing out some things from first hand experience for the discussion it is up to each person to find what works best for them all things considered.

I'm sure if push came to shove a flipac equipped truck could probably make it farther down trail "A" than I could with my truck but I can get that trailer many places and much of what I do is pick a nice spot, set-up camp and then go exploring so the RTT tent and flipac wont work for me anyway because I dont want to be setting up and taking down camp to go explore and once the trailer is unhooked I am for sure getting farther down the trail than any other set-up. Different strokes for different folks, its all good as long as your enjoying yourself!

That must have been epic rain. Bailing out of the ARB tent is crazy weather. FWIW I have not been limited by trail selection since adding the flippac. Still very stable... really no different than a normal shell with a roof rack on it CG wise or any different from the bed rack I used to run with a RTT. For me it really beats towing offroad or on road for that matter (2.7L.) Like you said, different strokes.

Are you asking for inside pics of my trailer, the Aliner? or the other trailer you quoted?

So I pulled the trigger on a Mombasa RTT. It is awesome and cant wait to use it. I want to put it over my bed so it is not too high since my lease has some low trees. I picked up some Thule cross bars and mounts. I made a mount, but wonder if it will hold the weight plus me. The pic shows the first one and still have 3 more to make. Here is a pic and let me know what yall think.

Bolt some 1-1/2" unistrut across to your mounts and it'll hold.

I was planning on using the 65" Thulle bars and the tent mounts would be put closest to the bed rails

Always tent camped or in the truck bed in the past. I'm building a 4x8' camper out of a harbor freight trailer right now. Widened the axle, lifted with yota leaf springs, shackles and 30's. I'll get some progress pics up this weekend.

im either in a buddys trailer, or just on a cot outside. ill tent it though if im hunting for more then like 4 days.

got a random rain one time when i was on a cot outside, and i just threw a tarp over me. luckily i was drunk enough to not be bothered by the sound or rain nailing the tarp

I use tents when family camping. However, I have also done many solo expeditions where I am out for 3-5 days. On those occasions, I remove the backseat seat bottom and fold down the seat backs. This creates a flat surface for my inside gear. When I arrive at a site to camp for the night I move the front passenger seat all the way forward and fill in the void behind it with a tote and or soft duffle bag. I then deploy my Thermarest matress pad in a diagonal pattern. I sleep like a champ in the cab safe and protected. Not only is this fast and easy it was absolutely necessary given the 40+ mile an hour winds that are routinely encountered in the desert. I like to camp up high if possible and the wind is usually even more severe at these locations.

There was a time once when I was in Death Valley where for a minute, I thought my truck was going to fly of the mountain during the night. The wind shook the truck so hard it felt as if it was being rocked by the Chargers Offensive Line.

I have a shell now but don't anticipate sleeping back there, but maybe once a year.
