How to carry shotgun to shooting range in ex. cab?

I like to shoot trap and skeet, and I have an extended cab tacoma. I'd like to just put the guns on the floor behind my seats (cased) - is this legal? loaded or unloaded? cased or uncased? I live in Alabama currently. I'd really rather not stick my guns in the truck bed, even though I have a tonneau.

 

check with your local law enforcement. I am blessed in South Dakota where we don't have to have them cased and we can have the mag loaded as long as there is not a round in the chamber. Most places are not like this though.

 

I live in TN and i always just carry mine unloaded and behind the seat. If for some reason i am moving from one dove feild to another close by i might leave the mag loaded but very rarely

 

I like to hang mine out the window and point it at other cars..... just so they know I have a weapon in the car.... LOL



Just check with you state and local laws... most police officers wont bother you too much if you get pulled over and tell them as soon as they walk up to your window. Just explain that its in the back seat, unloaded, and in its case. I would put your ammo in the bed of the truck too just to be safe.

 

another alabamian lol.. i like to just put my gun in the rear floor board or the rear seat. cased or uncased is fine as long as its unloaded. Thats what I learned in hunters safety education anyways.

 

Have a 4 door, keep it in a soft case on floorboard or back seat.
I have been stopped before, I just state there is a shootgun in the case in the back, unloaded of course.

In my experiences I wouldn't see a point in carrying it with rounds in the mag to a range. The places I've been to have a range officer that inspects every firearm before you can go in, and they require it to have an empty chamber and mag. Besides, it's just safer to transport it in a case and completely unloaded.

 

Aright, phew. I just didn't want to run afoul of the law (or keep my guns knocking around in the bed!) since I know typically people put them in their trunks. Floor behind my seats in cases unloaded it is! Now I just need to get a new 12 gauge, since my dad decided not to give me his spare.

 

I live in California, where you must use a cable lock, then apply for permission by the state to move your weapon, and on the day you need to move it, a police escort will disassemble the gun and drive with you to your destination.

 

I live in PA..... and any guns we carry in our vehicles are in cases and totally unloaded.

Packing them up in a case (soft or hard) is less threatening (per say) than having them laying out in the open and 'ready' to use (atleast, that's what the cop might think).

We play airsoft also and the guns look pretty damn close to the real deal - we have several M4's, MP5, pistols, etc - and we also keep those in cases.

Flailing an M4 airsoft pistol around out in the open is NOT a good idea - no matter who sees it. It looks real from a distance and anyone could pick you out for being a terrorist (or whatever).

yup..Jersey you need to have it unloaded, in a case and the ammunition is supposed to be in the glove box, or as far away from the weapon as possible.

i live in sc and idk the laws but mw and my pops allways jyst put the barrel of the gun in the floor board and had the but of the guns up in the seat between us no case or anything and loaded but not one in the chamber

legal most likely not but never have gotten caught

 

I have a double cab, I live in CA. I just put my shotgun in a plastic case on the back seat. I keep the ammo in a different container. I never use a cable lock.

I was heading to the Oak Tree Gun Club with my dad to shoot trap and we got pulled over by a LA county sherriff. He saw the gun cases on the back seat. We told him we were going shooting. He said ok. Still gave me a ticket for speeding, and let us go.

 

i also live in PA, and regardless of the laws anywhere, i feel this is the best route to take for your safety.

In Alabama it looks like rifles or shotguns can be carried in vehicles, loaded or unloaded, cased or not, wherever you like.

Having said that, lots of guys have accidentally shot themselves while pulling a loaded rifle/shotgun out of a vehicle. If a gun is cased there's absolutely no sense to have it loaded, it isn't intended for emergency defensive purposes or it wouldn't be in a case in the first place.

Sometimes I put mine in the case. Usually I leave it laying on the back seat, unloaded.
But I'm in KS. Wild West rules still apply here.

In the back seat is fine. I'm on the paranoid side, though, so there's no way in hell I would carry a loaded gun just sitting on the floor in the back seat. Keep the shells out of it until you reach your destination... It'll also probably make the cops happier if you do run into them.

 

I'm in Huntsville - just moved here from Saint Louis for my new job. Thanks. Yeah, I wasn't planning on rolling around with a loaded gun, I just wanted to have a good understanding of what is and is not OK - I'll probably be putting my guns unloaded in cases in the back.
