The young guys that need to keep food in their families mouths get an exception from me. The other guys who have millions in the bank should lose their union certs for working somewhere else.

The complications with playing elsewhere appear when a player gets hurt. If an NHL player is unable to play when the league is ready to go, teams may actually have a legal footing to suspend the player w/o pay.

Unfortunately for the players, they are insuring their NHL contracts while likely playing for significantly less money. Apparently too, they are insuring but a portion of their salaries. This is another hit to their bottom line which they already see drying up. This is the key piece of the article here :

McRae said players were seeking to insure that they would get at least part of their NHL contracts if they went overseas, got injured, and then returned to play on their respective NHL teams if the lockout was lifted. “It is not cheap, that is for sure,” said McRae, without giving specifics. “We are looking not only at career-ending injury, but temporary injury.”
