Ostrichsak: I am curious what your stance is on New York making carbinated soft drinks (i.e. Coke and Pepsi) larger than 16-ounces illegal?

Do I even really need to answer this? I'm sure my stance is pretty obvious.

I was just saying that if the government decided to do something like that, I wouldn't refuse the assistance. And if it was a cigarette or MJ tax, then the only people who would pay it are the purchasers of those products. I'm not talking about a new income tax.

Oh and Sean we are definitely paid year round if that is how we choose to take our salary, but the yearly income is not much and the hours put in by teachers during the year and in preparation for each new year are pretty comparable to a 40 hour week all year round. But the time off is nice, can't put a price on it really. Sorry to bring up old conversations, but I had other stuff going on.

If you mean "Do they get paid salary for a year?" then yes, just like any other year round job, they get paid year round. Summer "vacation" for lots of teachers is by no means vacation. My mom teaches summer school, all volunteer, as well as coaches women's lacrosse, men's/women's ski team, and women's volleyball, again all volunteer. I grew up with both my parents teaching, one at a BOCES (occupational education) and one at the local public school, both in upstate NY. In NY, in order to be tenured as a teacher, you need a master's degree. I remember many nights between the ages of 15-18 helping my mom with her other job, having to help her organize because she was too busy with school, both her's and her students'. After watching my mom stay at school until 5pm, come home and try and make dinner for everyone, then complete her 16+ credits a semester, I felt like I should step in a little.

Teachers get paid crap, for the last 3 years I have been paid approx $10k more a year than either my mom or my dad. Both of them have Master's Degrees (mandated by the state of NY), I have a high school diploma and a real keen knack for fixing things (equipment tech for solar companies). They decided to stick with teaching, both of them are in it over 15 years. I can't begin to explain to you how much stress, both financially and just in regular life, the career path of teaching has.

Sorry, off the soap box, that particular subject really hits home. Literally.

I thank you. I think most people actually do.

    So...on a lighter note:

Billy bob is super nervous cuz he just got married and it's about time for his wedding night. His pappy tells him it'll be all right and sends him into the spare camper trailer to his waiting bride, bobby Jo. About two minutes later he comes running out of the trailer very upset. Pappy says "what's wrong?!" as billy bob comes running up. Billy bob says "pappy, I don't know what to do, I think bobby Jo is a virgin!" pappy says "git yer stuff, we're going home, any woman who isn't good enough for her own kin isn't good enough for ours!.."

I thought teachers have the option of their salary being broken down so they are paid year-round, or bigger checks, but no summer pay?
