Your perfect snow build?

I'd consider going with that size also. Right now I've got 265/65R17 highway tires and another set of 265/70R17 A/T's. Drivability-wise, I want something right in the middle so the 255/70R17 fit the bill and Hankook makes their Dynapro in that size. As long as it's a daily driver and with my short lift, the 245/75R17 or 255/70R17 would look nice I think while still giving me decent fuel economy and handle well. I've also heard that some of the taller tires cause the transmission to shift 'weird'.

You're not making it easy! Have you heard, or noticed anything as far as a weird shift due to the taller tires? I haven't researched it much since I still have 2 sets of tires and won't need a new set for a while.

 

255/75/17 are basically the same height as 265/70/17

I have 275/70/17 , haven't noticed anything change since I switched from 265/70/17

 

So you think going from a stock 31" tire to a 32" tire will screw with the transmission's shift logic?

I might have to get a little taller when my tires wear out.

 

Not screw up the logic. I read that someone noticed the transmission shifting harder with the taller tires. I they were running the 255/85R16 tires. I haven't looked into it any further since my tires are in good shape.

Haven't noticed a difference with mine (265/75-16). Wonder if the guy with hard shifts had pre-TSB software?

 

He complained that the truck shifted at odd times through the whole range though , not just 1st - 2nd

 

I didn't notice anything different with the 265/70R17's either but I was reluctant to go taller after reading that. I like my smooth shifting truck

 

I know about the taller skinny tires. No one here in Alaska drives with fat tires during the winter. And if you do, you are screwed. What other things would you do?

You know skinny vs wide can be easly settled. How far you are from new england and how much money you willing to bet?

 

I had the same tires on my F150, it handled all the hunting trails and job sites with ease, my vote is tall and skinny

 

Another vote for wide tires.:. Think about it, if skinny was better snow cats would have 6" wide tracks.

It can go both ways. Snow vs ice require different tires IMO. Studs vs studless... Yadda Yadda Yadda

 

That's actually not true. Contact patch size increases... Increasing weight increases friction, changing the rubber compound will increase friction. But the size of the tire does not increase friction.

We must have an engineer in here somewhere.

Other items if consider for winter driving and wheeling. Fog lights and driving lights if you plan on night driving.

Weight in the box of the truck. Lots of commuting and potential for rough roads you may want to look at some system of securing whatever weight you put in the back. I use sandbags between the wheel wells secured by 2x10 boards in my old truck. Cut some grooves I hold skis and boards too. Got stuck offroad once and jammed a bag under the wheel. It tore open and the gravel created the traction I needed to get moving...

Mud flap removal... Backing up in deeper snow with larger tires will make short work of them anyways.

For wheeling obviously everything you have will work different in the snow. Jacks are a pain in the ass in snow so try an have something to use as a base.

 

Friction is independent of contact area, its just Normal Force (weight of the truck) x Friction factor.

Its the pressure that is increased with a smaller tire, Force / Area.
