i recently took my 05 tacoma 4dr 4x4 v6 long bed in for a factory recall on the spiral cable. i was told it needs a tune up( new plugs and fuel system service) and and the 4wd/rear diff needs serviced and hubs need greased and that the diff fluid looked dark and needed changed. note... i have not serviced it yet,im waiting for this weekend. tonight i engaged my 4h and 4l to see how she acted. it took a while to drop into 4h. i drove it a few miles and stopped to check out the 4L. it banged when it went in and banged drove it 15 ft and it banged when i took it out after waiting for approx. 2 min and while driving approx 10 ft. should i be concerned? and what would cause that? im a little nervous about it and would really appreciate some insight. thanks in advance

Please tell me you were off-road... If not, I think you'd better read your manual.

As long as you're going in a straight line being on or off road makes no difference. Just don't try turning and you should be fine.

    back to bone stock.
bang in and banging out..mine did that when i bought it. the dealer told me it was because the past owner never used 4x4...i use it all the time now..and it slides in super smooth. no hint of a change when it goes from 2H to 4H.

things smoothed out quick. just a few uses. the rest of your sentence made little sense to me..it banged and made noise as you drove along?

the rest of the issues? that mechanic is gonna make you open your wallet Wide. DIY it all. super super easy.

I made this mistake when I first got my truck. I just mentioned it because it was something I did and will never do again. Considering he just got his truck this could have been an issue. I figured starting with the simplest explanation would be a good place to start troubleshooting...
