I don't flash my brights to warn but do warn other drivers with the hazard lights. I can see how a cop could pull one over for blinding a driver, a reason to pull over drunks, the list goes on.

Using the hazard lights seems to pose no problem though. There isn't that possible confusion of, did they flash me because my lights aren't one, or they think my HIDs are on bright, but aren't. Hazards are a universal, hey slow down and be more observant. *(I feel Curb Your Enthusiasm needs to do an episode about this)... Cops really can't pull you over for Obstruction of justice, (they may because you messed with their quota), but doesn't sound like it would hold up. You are merely preventing an unsafe act from occurring. Doesn't sound illegal to me. *Hey mister don't rob that bank. Oh alright...That's it buddy, how dare you speak some sense into him or her. Your going to the slammer.*

And in case your wondering, no I don't have a law degree so blah blah, don't sue me.

    Fan of this thread.

Went on a road trip and found out that the truckers warn each other on the CB's. I was around a group and was listening to where they were spotting cops waiting on the side or hiding behind the bushes. Pretty funny actually

During the day, but never at night. To much confusion to do it at night, plus you don't know if your flashing a cop or not.

I flash them from time to time. Usually only in the daytime though. That way I know the oncoming car isn't a cop himself. As for the illegal vs legal argument. I'm sure it's State/County/Town specific. But here's one Judges example from Florida that says it's protected under the first amendment.

After all, would you get a ticket for calling someone a few miles behind you and telling them you just passed a speed trap?

Sometimes. Depends on the situation. I'm not a speeder and I hate people who drive without regard for others' safety. But sometimes the cops are clearly in revenue raising mode and not serving and protecting mode.

The only ticket I've ever had in 17 years and over 250K miles was for 56 MPH in a 35 zone. There was a 50 MPH sign on that road for at least nine years prior to that day. Then they decided to build a shopping center. The 50 MPH sign was replaced with a 35 MPH sign a week or so before I got the ticket. Nothing else had changed. The cop said it was in preparation for the construction traffic coming in and out of the site. That traffic was not there at 9AM on a Saturday morning. I deserved a ticket for 6MPH over the limit. I received one for 21 MPH over. According the the cop, he did me a favor and wrote it up under one code instead of another (?), so I could go to traffic school for it. He said I wasn't the only local who hadn't noticed the sign change.

So yeah, in a case like that, if I see them camped out after a recent rework of the speed limit signs or something like that, I flash. I heard somewhere that's illegal as well.

This exact thing happened to me while driving out by the lake...I thought the person was flashing me because my brights were on...so I flashed back and gave him the bird

Okay, I guess you had to be there...it was a dick move on my part but never had anybody do that to me. There was a bad accident around the corner I was traveling...THATS why he flashed

Is it a "speed trap" since you know the speed limit?

I don't warn other drivers because the police are trying to do their jobs. The police don't come into your office and hang the phone up when you're trying to make a sale, so why do you prevent them from being efficient at their job? Some of you guys are probably the type that complain about crime rates while you keep cops from stopping and arresting criminals. If other drivers want to speed, let them face the consequences. The police aren't forcing them to do it. If you think the speed limit is too low, contact your city officials.

I will always flash my lights if there is an accident or a slow down. I don't always do it for a speed trap. It's illegal. "Improper use of a signaling device" IIRC.

It would have to be considered a signaling device first, then be used improperly. Headlights are not signaling devices. They are a safety feature for driving in low light conditions.

Considering I was advised of this by a policeman, I am not wrong. A citation for improper use of a signaling device would be valid, since a headlight can be used as a signaling device. Your logic is flawed.

Because cops are always right? Keep drinking the Kool-aid man.

Heres some more logic for ya:

If I pound a nail into a board with a rock does that mean it was a hammer when it was laying on the ground before I picked it up, or was it a rock that I used as a hammer?

Read the laws on vehicles. They are clearly not the same. There are lighted lamps and there are signaling lamps. Not the same. Still FAIL.
