    Ok mom.

I just want people to know that just because a cop said so does mean its the law.

For example, I recieved a rear bumper violation in my truck and this was the cited violation:

    IC 9-19-4-1
Passenger cars originally equipped with bumpers; bumper height
Sec. 1. When operated upon a highway, a motor vehicle registered as a passenger car that was originally equipped with bumpers as standard equipment must be so equipped. The bumper height may not vary more than three (3) inches from the original manufactured bumper height for the vehicle.
    As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.7.

However I dont drive a passenger car, I drive a truck with truck plates which is covered under this:

    IC 9-19-4-2
Trucks with declared gross weight of not more than 11,000 pounds
Sec. 2. When operated upon a highway, a motor vehicle registered as a truck with a declared gross weight of not more than eleven thousand (11,000) pounds must be equipped with bumpers of substantial construction on the extreme front and the extreme rear of the vehicle. The height of the front and rear bumpers may not exceed thirty (30) inches when measured from level pavement to the bottom of the bumper.
    As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.7.

I showed him the law from my phone and he still wrote me a citation. He lost. He was not right just because he was a cop.

I don't flash when driving my truck or car. Flashing brights is very blinding to traffic, and the last thing I want to do is to hinder drivers even more. In addition, I want every speeder to be ticketed. It keeps me and everybody else safer.

I will however, flash motorcycles if I am on my bike. I don't use my headlight to flash them, but a tap on the helmet. This is common amoung m/c community.

    You mad bro?

Thats right, I can copy and paste the law that I used to get out of a ticket. Which proves that cops dont always know the laws they write tickets against.

And last I checked, Purdue doesnt issue GED's in engineering.

/Back on topic. Does anyone know if the OP can add a Poll to this thread?

First, the safe operation of a vehicle on the roadways isn't a contest with a winner or loser. Life or death is on the line, with a bit more weight given to one over the other in the laws and by law enforcement. Second, obviously officers don't always know the specifics of every law. That's why we have lawyers, judges, and courts to determine guilt or innocence. The system works, which is why I get angry when some (not you specifically) attempt to undermine it with rhetoric, disinformation, and/or falsehoods.

I agree 100%. I also get angry when some attempt to undermine the laws with "a cop said so" so it must be true. People make mistakes all the time, and officers are no different.

Learn to read. At least they teach that. Improper use of a signalling device and improper signalling device are not the same thing.

And way to go...the rest of us have moved on already. A little slow are you?

I know I'm late to this, but chances are he did it cause you decided to whip out your phone to tell him how wrong he was, also he still wins, he gets paid OT for court time. You lose your time, gas money to get there. He wins, are you friends with a guy named Sunflower?

Dad used to flash the brights quite often warning of cops. Remember it very vividly. Picked up the habit a bit. Not sure if he's still doing it as I obviously grew up, got my own cars, etc...probably is.

With some of the more negative responses regarding it here, my pops was an EMT/Firefighter for awhile in his 20's, and is a pretty straight laced, anal-retentive fella.

Taken a few things from this thread, some good points going on.

Biggest question mark to me though, why is there a function to flash the brights on cars in the first place then? And not just flash the headlights, but brights.

Yes I do and I am thankful to those who do the same. Sometimes here, depending where you are in the state, people will flash their lights if there are moose or deer in the road ahead. That is much appreciated as well.

The flash is pretty useful for warning of cops :D. Also flashing brights at DBs who don't dim their lights as they approach (actually had a county sheriff do this to me a few days ago, and ignored the request to dim his lights. Derp).

I like to let people know of a speed trap/cattle on the road/impending raptor attack by flashing my lights. I've been saved from a couple speeding tickets that way.
