Shooting a football game tomorrow for my friend. Going to be using my 70-300 f/4-5.6(I know, supa fast), any tips? probably going to be shooting wide open towards the end when it gets darker, and Ill have my ISO around 1000, dont really want to push it too much because I dont know how to reduce noise.

I have tried to remove noise with the PS filter, but it doesnt seem to do much in my eyes..

Up the ISO, you are gonna have too (lighting might be crap). You need at least a 1/640 shutter speed if not faster.

Shoot low (i.e shoot from your knees)

It's more important to capture the game from both action and exposure perspectives than it is to have noise free results. If you need to, use something like Neat Image or a NIK plugin or the PS filter to deal with it in post.

If you don't get a higher shutter speed, you'll have a bunch of images that are either soft or out of focus and you might as well not turn them in. Also, shoot in manual mode and check your exposure often.

Also, if you're using a newer Nikon body, don't be afraid to jack the ISO up.

And to what Pete said about jpg vs. raw. I would say that shooting jpg means you need to get it right in camera for that to work out. The other reason to shoot jpg only is that it takes less time to write the files. This allows you to shoot bursts with less chance you'll fill the camera's buffer.

    Above all, have fun.

What do you guys think about D700 vs D600?

The only reason i ask is my D700 is starting to get old. all the rubber is starting to peel, and i really want video. I could sell my d700 for practically the price of a D600.....

Not saying im doing it. Just curious what you guys think

    i say do the upgrade...

the natural progression with digital photography is HD video...

at least in my industry, companies have long since transitioned from product photography to product video, and the two industries are eventually going to merge...

my suggestion is to open up your options for work by becoming well versed in DSLR video...

your photography style has taken hold and is established, so get a jump start into the next level...

if you can cruise up to Orange County, Samys Camera is currently running a no sales tax week and have a number of prosumer and pro level cameras on sale... the prices are essentially working out to B&H pricing except you don't have to wait for shipping... if you don't have the money up front, Samys has their own credit card, and all purchases over $500 have a promo of 12 months no interest...

B&H and BillMeLater are only at 6 months no interest...

This is true. I'm fairly sure I can push my camera with a high ISO and be ok but I just don't like to.

This is one thing I will be doing differently then normal. I usually would've used Av but like you said I need to make sure I am getting a fast enough shutter speed.

I'm going to try and not go too trigger happy tonight so with the updated buffer of the 7D I think I will be ok in that regard.

    I will definitely have fun!
Thank you. I will keep that in mind. As I don't have a very fast lens do you think if I have to 1/500 will be ok? As I am not on the sidelines shooting low isn't really an option lol. Trying to see if I can get one for the next few games.

I will think about this. I might end up going to raw+jpeg depending on how I think it is looking on the back of the camera. Like if I think colors are good then I'll move to jpeg. Because I will probably be cropping quite a bit so I don't want to go too low in quality.

Thank so much guys! I will post up some of what I get tomorrow or possibly tonight for you all to see. This is my first game so don't expect too much lol. Again, thanks for the advice.

I'd just do RAW. However I do shoot RAW/JPEG, but I use the JPEGs for the paper not my own library.

1/500 should be okay, however you might get a little motion blur.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Alright, this will be short and sweet. Got a raise @ work, and getting ready to buy my first D-SLR.

Either the D3200 or the D5100. Similar pricing on each and almost identical in most respects, but from what I can tell these are the differences that would have an impact on MY personal use:

    D-3200
(honestly, as an amateur hobby photographer w/ very limited D-SLR experience, this may be the better option, due to the more stripped-down feature list)

    PROS
    + Better video capture options (max 60fps @ 720p)
    + Higher "True Resolution" (24.1MP)
    + EXPEED-3 Sensor processing
    + Adjustable microphone sensitivity
    + Lighter and slightly smaller
+ Comes in RED (oooh! aaahhh!)

    CONS

    - Lack of tiltable LCD
    - not as many auto-scene modes
    - no in-camera HDR
    - lower ISO sensitivity
    - no White-balance bracketing
    - no Exposure bracketing
    - shorter battery life

    D-5100
(more advanced, but it does have some features I wouldn't mind utilizing every once in a while)

    PROS
    + In-Camera HDR capable
    + Higher ISO sensitivity
    + Better battery life
    + More Auto-Scene modes
    + 14-Bit RAW compression
    + Tiltable LCD

    CONS
    - Limited video capture options (max 30 fps @ 1080p/720p)
    - Lower "True Resolution" (16.1 MP)
    - No EXPEED-3 Processor
    - Slightly larger size

It's a close-call, but I wanted to get the opinion of the *OFFICIAL* photographers on TW.

Thanks in advance for you input, feedback, and advice.

I started out with the D3100

    FYI

The in camera HDR might not be what you are thinking. It creates a images that properly shows the highlights, not a cartoony Tone Mapped image.

I've yet to mess around with HDR, but I understand the concept. Some of the images I've seen are very dramatic, detailed, and look f*ckin amazing. But alas, capturing images like that may take me years to perfect, so it's not necessarily a deal-breaker.

honestly I'd get the D3200 as it has a better senor and IMO the tilt screen is just something that can easily break

Here they are! These are of the first JV game while it was still sunny. Once the second game came on my lens just wasnt fast enough. I was at f/4 1/500sec and ISO2000 and was still 2 1/2 stops underexposed. So I just stopped shooting and enjoyed the game as the first game was really the only one I needed to shoot. All of these were from the stands.
