This x100. Talk to some of the folks over on toyotaoff-road.com. That's pretty much the route that several of them have taken, and it's primarily the guys that really like to beat on their rigs.

If you were doing something like expedition travel, basically mild wheeling with a lot of camping, using the DD rig is probably fine. For more "obstacle based" wheeling where you're really going to be pushing it, I'd stay away from trying to make a DD into something to do that. It's too much of a compromise.

    Just my 0.02.

I agree. I'm going to wait until after college to do it. I'll get a cheap dd, but still want the truck to be able to take expo trips and drive on the interstate just fine. And then if i plan to beat on it, trailor it. Regarding axles, I just don't see myself getting anything other than tons with my driving style. Thanks for the advice.

if you wanna do tons at some point, do it! I'd love to. They definitely aren't budget friendly though haha. The cheap part is the axles themselves lol

If you're already set up for straight axle in the front, can you just go to a junk yard and pull the axles off an F250 and make it work without a ton of fab work? Just grind off the spring perches and link tabs, weld new ones, paint, bingo bongo? Obviously if it starts off IFS it's gonna be a ton of work. I just figured it'd be lots easier if it was a solid axle front to begin with. Maybe an axle rebuild on top of the other stuff too depending on condition.

depends on whether you want/have coils or leaves, and if you can match track width front and rear. Plus you usually have to turn down the axle tubes anyways to get the pumpkin to sit in the right place in relation to xfer case. Fords are driver side drop, chevys are passenger side.

and depending on vehicle, you have to take into account electronic issues. If everything was straight mechanical, then yeah it would be a hack fab and weld job. If you swap larger axles into something newer you have to worry about where the speed sensor is, swapping out your brake system to accomodate bigger breaks, ABS sensors, traction control, etc.

Thats why I love my cherokee. Everything is mechanical. Really would be the perfect starter platform if it had a full frame and not the pos unibody.

EDIT: not to mention, older ford 1-ton axles are worth their weight in gold and JY's know that. It's really the only way you can get anything bigger than a 44 that is HP and driver side drop. You could always pay 5k for a prebuilt axle I guess.

Is $2k about the cost of the ARB up front, installed? ;)

Anyone need a flat bed trailer to tow their junk? Got a friend selling one. $2k.

As an alternative data point... check this... maybe you should visit the pull-a-part in B'ham. :p

    What is that?

    It's a brake rotor.

    What's the rest of it?

Well I couldn't get it off this massive thing it's connected to. There's another rotor on the other end though.

Ok... $15 for two brake rotors.

Hmm....interesting. I doubt my luck would work that way. I'd go to check out and they guy would be like hmmm f250 axles? you must be building a wheeling vehicle. 10% price increase!

Lets be honest though, the only people buying axles are people using them for offroading. The people buying transmissions are usually people trying to save a buck and replace an entire transmission.
