Yeah, I realize I could do all this myself, but the shop manager tells me that it will more then likely void the Lifetime Powertrain warranty that came with it from the this particular dealership. And I realize the spark plugs need to be changed according to the book because of the specific engine type but at 30,000? Seems really low to me. Any thoughts on this? I really would like to keep my lifetime extended warranty.

Yes the plugs on the V6 need to go every 30k. I'd like to see their reasons for legally voiding your warranty if you do the work yourself.

Fuck there fake ass warranty ! It's not worth the paper it's printed on and what are they doing for that 500 plus dollars? Spark plugs fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. Clean your intake .drain and fill front rear diff and transfer case ? Oh change the oil.cab air filter and engine air filter .

I question the hell out of it. He told me that they voided a warranty for not properly rotating tires on a Camry. Seriously? Smells like BS. Now this is the Extended lifetime powertran warranty that all new toyotas come with at the Mall of GA, not the factory warranty. Wanted to make that clear, but I plan on having it well past the factory warranty is up.

My stealership tried to use the 30K service cost as to why they wanted $1800 for their extended service plan. Even at $600 for the 30K, that sure as hell doesn't make up the other $1200 for oil changes and tire rotations. Thieving bastards every one of 'em!

Let's see... how much did this lifetime warranty cost? maybe... $1,000. Now lets add 589 twice. That means at expiration of the factory warranty at 60,000 miles you're already out of pocket $2178 dollars. Only NOW does this lifetime power train warranty have any value to you.

You have every reason to expect 200k out of the stock power train before any serious problems: now you're up to 2356 + 2178 or 4534 dollars out of pocket. How much does a salvage motor or transmission or whatever cost?

You gotta see the economics of it. These extended warranties rarely pay off. If you just keep the money you WOULD have spent in a decent investment, adding the money you WOULD have spent on the required services to keep it in effect, you'd have more than enough to do any repairs.

some dealers (honda dealers i've seen) offer lifetime powertrain, at no additional cost (I know you're paying for it in some way or another) so it might not have been an option, just sales gimmick

I did NOT pay for any type of extended warranty. Every new Toyota sold at this dealership comes with it on top of the factory warranty.

I think I paid about $500 for my 30,000. The only reason I didn't do it myself is I was 300 miles from home attending my academy and had no way of getting it done in the parking lot. All other service has been done by me.

Even using all Redline synthetic oils you could do it all yourself (both pigs, xfer, manual tranny, air filter, plugs) for less than $140. Under $110 if you have an auto. Either way you could spend a Saturday and have it all done.

    Just something to consider

I think most if not all customers probably will do something to void the dealership's "Limited Lifetiime Warranty." It's a sales tactic but to get the dealership to actually honor it if something happens to the drivetrain after the factory warranty has expired is probably next to impossible. The plugs in the 4.0 aren't Iridiums hence the 30k mile interval.

AAAahhh... I see! that's the gimmick then...

Keep you paying those $500 30K mile service bills with the carrot of a warranty that they know they have very little likely hood of paying on.

    Good luck with that...

I think changing the plugs every 30k is stupid. I have 60k on mine and plan to do them at 100k, yeah and I know they aren't the special plugs but honestly I've seen some plugs go all the way to 260k and still be fine.

Yeah, I know. Just trying to keep the warranty. Knowing my luck the engine will blow right after the factory warranty is up. Unlikely, yeah.

Yes, I know which two plugs they use but to think I'm going to change every 30,000 to keep a warranty is stupid. It's just really not necessary. I wanted to go to the Iridiums. Aren't they 90,000? Could be wrong.
