Easy there tiger....All I am askign is for proof.....If you make claim that skinny tires are better you should be able to back that claim (like have some video with proof) Show me snow run where somebody is using skinny tires and its doing better... and I mean skinny like below 8 inches wide.

EDIT: Why so many people get so upset when you ask them to back up their claim?

No one has tires under 8" wide... that's a ridiculous stipulation to put on this. hell 235's are still over 9" wide and they are certainly considered a 'skinny' tire for all intents and purposes. That being said, I believe that tractor looking buggy should satisfy your need for proof

Also, the reason it's frustrating with you is because you've thrown out or chosen to ignore anything we have presented just because it pokes holes in your theory. YOU mentioned ice races but when I did, nope, studs don't count. Now you want to see a decent sized truck with tires under 8" wide... I'm with DoorDing, done arguing with you. I'll continue to run my skinny tires, you continue to run your fat tires and we'll both be just fine.

Oh, and DoorDing, nice Adam Sandler reference :bananadance:

if im looking to go fast around corners in snow id consider skinny....but if im looking to go through big snowdrifts and not worried about hitting a turn at 60 i'd go fat.... Pretty much the fat tire will get you more traction to get momentum rolling in deep snow....the skinny tire will take longer...however at speed the skinny will dig in for turns better..... so id say fat...since its not a race...

Why is this wide-vs-narrow tire thing even up for debate? Use narrow tires when the snow is shallow and you want to cut through the snow to reach the pavement underneath. Wide tires when there's no pavement. And the difference between the two has to be pretty disparate to show a noticeable change in traction, not 235 vs 275. What "narrow" means:

Since winter tires with their soft compound will wear out after two winters, just get a 235 or 245 because the tires are cheaper.

    Interesting info...

    http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=126

Again as everyone one and their uncle has acknowledged... if you want to do some extreme wheeling, dedicated snow offroad rig. You will likely want far wider tires. Not what the OP was looking for.

quick search supports this. in 285/75/16 tires there are 30 results and only 1 winter tire. In 235/85/16 tires there are 42 results and 5 winter tires. seems for winter tires, narrower is more popular.

If you could put tread on a steamroller that bitch would be unstoppable in snow

    Wide > skinny

The wife has had studless Nokians on her Tribeca for 3 years...one of the best riding tires we've had on anything, and like it's on rails during the winter. So impressed I was that before the snow fell last year I had a new set on the Tacoma. No issues on the highway or on a couple of winter trips to Anchorage and critter hunting in more remote areas. I always carry a set of chains on longer trips, just for backup. A lot of snow and ice last year, but not as much as OP. Once the ground freezes here the snow/ice is staying put til about late April/early May. DOT does a good job on the Glenn. According to where you work in Anchorage would determine studs or not. Good luck, it won't be long until we'll need to switch...again!
