I’ve noticed the shifting between 1st gear and 2nd gear is a little rough. Now, I have been driving manual for 35 years so that’s not the issue. All other gears move very smooth to the next and allow me to proceed with driving and do my own thing. But whenever, I go from 1st to 2nd, I have to really focus to ensure I don’t rock the gears, or force it into 2nd. Has anyone had similar experiences and if so does this clear up after time.

 

I have the same thing happen. Almost feels like the fluid is low or the clutch is not disengaging enough. I have talked the the service dept, at first they tried to tell me how to drive a stick. I told them I drive a 13spd Fuller roadranger for work so then it went on to bring it in at 5000mi and they will look at it. I'm bringing it in tomorrow 16 Jan 07 at 4750mi. I got the manual for the simply fact that it should outlast my grand kids and to have a problem leaving the dealer lot, well I thought maybe it just needed a little break in. I will let you know what they say tomorrow.

 

It's a big difference in gears between first and second, maybe more than your used to, and definitely more than the four/five shifts. I haven't noticed any difference in the clutch though, feels real smooth, just have to get higher RPMs in first to get a smooth shift into second.

I have a 4 cylinder – approximately what rpm’s do you shift between 1st and 2nd gear to get a smooth transition?

 

put some redline mt90 in your tranny, that should help smooth out your shifts.

 

Mines a 4.0 but I tend to go to about 3.5K in first and 2.5 in the rest. Thats driving easy and not trying to blast off.

 

My '06 taco seems to shift just fine, but I've been noticing a a high pitched "howl" at approx. 2000 RPM when the tranny's cold. FWIW, I shift between 2200 and 2800 RPM at all times. I've got about 6700mi right now, and other than this all seems well. I'm going to keep an eye on it, and call the dealer next week if it gets worse.

So I went to the dealer/service Dept. and was told they have a TSB on the Tacoma. They have to order the new clutch pedal/arm and cut out a patch of the carpet padding to allow for more travel of the pedal to fully disengage the clutch. The service manager didn't even need to drive it. he came out saying he knew what it was and will order the parts and call me when they come in. So if your truck is shifting hard look into it at the dealer. When I go back I will get the TSB# or what ever they use to designate the problem and post it here.

 

I am having this exact same issue on my 07 2.7L 5 speed. I put over 200K miles on my last clutch/transmission before I sold it. I know it isn't me.

I will contact the service department about that TSB. I am very interested in the TSB#!

 

Funny how when I talked to them on the phone 5 or 6 times they didn't have a clue, but when I showed up in person it was a whole different story. I'm just glad they didn't try to tell me I don't know how to shift. I hope it fixes the problem. It kills me to clip a few gears on a new truck.

 

I know what you mean. As I grinded gears for the first time in several years, my wife said, "I know you're upset, but you never grind gears. Are you sure you don't need me to drive."

BACK ON SUBJECT - She noticed the same problem. So, now, NO ONE can say it is a guy problem!

 

Yeah my wife can drive a standard and my John Deere tractor. I'm just glad Toyota admitted the problem. When its in the shop I will ask about mileage and that noise in the passenger door when I hit a bump.

They have had the parts for 4 days and forgot to call me. I bring it in on Friday the 2nd of March. I will post the results and any #s I get.

 

They showed me the parts and its in the shop as I type. They are going to scan it for codes to see if the mileage can get any better. I will post when I get it back.
