The risks that old folks present are presented everyday by everyone...In general-they might be slower or see less but there are days that I'm beat ass tired coming homr from work and may have slower reaction times.....I do agree that they should not drive after some point....but a car hurtling down the road @ 100+ with a driver who has had a license for that little time and likely has no formal training is going to cause far more damage than an old geezer.

There are also places which do retest older drivers at a certain point...but they are following the laws (albeit laws that need review) The guys who street race those cars...are not.

heres another thought.... the individual who owned the car before is GOING to buy a new car. Whether it be the same one or not its a safe bet that whatever he gets he will use for the same thing (street racing).

All im saying is that rather than just trash the car why not make some money off of it?

As stated above, if it is someones desire to dump money into a car to race it theyre going to get the parts to do so. Whether they have to work an extra couple of weeks to be able to afford the parts new again or whether they buy them back from an auction makes no difference.

no, chances are it would be other people interested in modifing their cars. again, you cant assume theyre going to streetrace it. Heres an example of what i mean......

lets say there is a guy who owns an x-runner who has a TRD blower on it for the 1gr..... lets say he gets busted by the cops for streetracing and they say "we will just part it out". now lets in turn say that YOU happen to be in the market for a good deal on a TRD blower and you come across that specific one the guy with the x-runner had on his..... Does this mean that you are going to go streetrace too...... i mean, really, do you NEED the blower? and if you want it just for some extra power does that mean you are going to go street race?

You are correct. I agree. I drive tired sometimes too. So therefore I'm posing a threat to myself and others. (Man... I got got told.) :p

Anyways, I wasn't trying to come down on elder people, just a thought about other road hazzards. ;) I'm gonna be old too one day.

true, BUT why take the risk of putting said vehicle out there to possibly racing again

    bingo

i dont disagree with that BUT there are certain times and certain circumstances that you have to be a little more "discerning" about what to do with things...

you wouldnt sell a ADJUDICATED mentally ill person a gun would you? just like i wouldnt let someone without a license drive a vehicle away if i were to arrest the driver

yep...people will sue anyone over any little thing nowadays

I dont know if the elderly and deer kill more people, but i agree that they are just as much of a hazard on the roadway...the difference between the elderly and some kid with a shiny new license and a fast car...the elderly person doing 45 on the interstate actually gives you plenty of reaction time...the kid barrelling thru the intersection redlight at 100+mph gives you NO chance

well sure thats possible...BUT again...time and resources to part out the vehicles is probably a higher cost than scrapping the whole car...and again...whats stopping the guy's buddy from buying it back for him?

The thing is...while it may seem like there are better options or other options...this makes the offense hurt that much worse to the guy who was busted...its supposed to act as a deterrant just as much as its a punishment

could there possibly be a strike system in place before the car gets crushed...sure...but again...the govt is taking a HUGE risk by letting a KNOWN streetracing vehicle back on the street

i understand completely where you are comming from with the piece about it being a punishment. There would be nothing worse than to see your hard earned money and work being destroyed.

From the perspective of a taxpayer i would say sell off the vehicle. theres no more liability in the government selling a modified car than there is me selling someone a modified car. so long as everything is disclosed with what the vehicle has done to it and the risks associated with it. In your example of the hot coffee spillage, that was a winning lawsuit due to there being no warning or label on the beverage (as stupid as that is). Thats why there are such goofy precautions on EVERYTHING.... to avoid liability. so long as its disclosed and documented nothing could be done.

and on the piece where you say "whats stopping the guys buddy from buying the car back"..... in all honesty is there a difference if he gets his car back or buys a car that is just as fast off the private market? Either way he will be at it again ya know?

anyhow, i think its been taken off topic in my case. I just get pissed when i see the govt spend $380,000 to take a picture of air force one with the statue of liberty and then take cars that could be sold for a lot and just throw them away.....

The gov't that destroyed these cars and the gov't that flies the HMX planes are two different things...You'd be better off saying the Gov't of Cali that can't pay teachers etc etc etc is wasting money.

And I'm not even saying WINNING law suits....but if the suits get brought the gov't has to spend money to defend against them...In this case...They don't.
Is it ideal...no...but again there is a far better chance of these cars being misused when resold than being misused if they are destroyed. And what about the folks who are injured killed in a street racing accident...Think they won't try to sue any and everyone they can to get money from it??

all in all the government is in debt. i dont care if youre talking a state level or country wide and i think we can agree on that.

Theres no doubt people will try to sue. They will try to sue the kid driving the car and the parents if hes not of age. other than that you cant really do much else..... you cant sue chevy for selling a zr-1 (which is essentially a race car) if the tool triving it hits and kills people, ya know what im saying? Just cuz Chevy sold the street legal race car doesnt mean theyre liable for the idiot who was going 200 mph.
