Ive been getting this strange noise from my 6 speed manual trans on my 2012 doublecab short bed 4x4 with only 5000 miles on it. The noise is more prominent when the truck is cold, first startup of the day in the morning, but progressively get quieter as the truck drives and warms up. Its is a fairly loud whining yet low pitched noise that can be heard in and outside of the cab, but its loader inside the cab with all the windows shut and the radio off and happens when my foot is NOT depressing the clutch pedal, and the noise goes away completely when the clutch pedal is depressed, even when the truck is cold... The noise goes totally and completely away when my foot IS depressing the clutch... I have no idea what this problem could be and ive never seen anything like this b4.. I know the 6 speed transmissions are noisy by nature... But idk what it could be, or is this just normal oporation, because other than this noise the trans shifts fine and my truck is extreme light duty, all i do with it is drive on the road.. Nothing else, and the truck has never been above 3000 rpm... So please, any help is appreciated.

If it is a squeaking type of noise it is probably the throw bearing on the clutch. I had this problem with my 6 speed and took it in and thats what they told me was causing the squeaking sound. I'm pretty sure it's a fairly common problem with the 6 speeds.
It has been a while since mine was fixed but IIRC the sqeak would kind of pulse with the rpm of the engine, which kindof sounded like a loose belt (if that makes sense?) so if I tapped the gas the sqeak would pulse quicker...
Hope this helps, just from my experience.

Well the throwout bearing is only working when the clutch pedal is depressed, and the noise actually goes away when i depress the clutch ... So idk what it could possibly be... It doesn't make sence... And its really more of a whine than a squeak.

Anything like this?....if so welcome to the tsb club. It's a known issue with fix. Search clutch tsb or 6 speed clutch issues and you will see many many threads on this.

At least the op should still be in warranty. My sleeve kit is on its way from URD to fix this same issue. Now to find time to drop the transmission...

I hear that kit is better then the TSB fix, so good luck with it. I would have gotten the 6 speed if that kit was available, but I passed for the 5 speed. No time for this stuff.

That's what I hear to. And I hope we are both right! Too bad about passing on the 6 speed. But I bet your mileage is much better than mine...

Don't assume that. The issue here is the pilot shaft is aluminum and get scored very quickly die to the design. The noise is from it spinning on the shaft or wobbling if you will from the uneven surface. Let them find the issue under warranty if it is this problem.

A long time ago in a thread far far away......http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/17819-throwout-bearing-again.html

Edit: These guys are talking about getting new transmissions because the shaft that gets damaged cannot be replaced in this transmission. It is part of the entire bell housing. It was so bad some company made an aftermarket kit to fix those out of warranty. It involved a steel shaft sleeve and bigger TOB to go over the damaged shaft. This was also an issue with the FJ's with similar transmission.

Yeah the extra power would be fun, but this 4 pulls ok past 2500rpm. It's only about 21-22mpg average with my tires and 5100 lift. You have to rev out the shifts to make it smooth, but I love it. I have the clutch TSB for the 5 speeds where the clutch was weak. So now I have a 1st gen v6 clutch and it's great.

Good luck with dealer OP. Keep on them and you'll get this sorted out.

Yeah people probably aren't noticing the issue right away like you are. As you can see from thread people start to get pissed with it about 20k-30k miles in. Glad to see after 7 years this is still coming off the assembly line with a design flaw. But then there's those rear springs too..........

It gets louder as you can tell.

It may be hard to explain with such a new truck and you may be better of waiting till it's louder.....but I say the hell with it. YOU notice it and they should help you out. Don't go in with a hot head saying you saw it online and all. Like we said you can't assume this is the exact issue, but it is sounding like the starting stages of it. Just explain the noise and see what they can do.

Just be aware that once the quill is marked up there's nothing a new TOB from the TSB will do to fix it. Read this thread.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/58278-tsb-t-o-bearing-issue.html

Don't get worked up yet; just stay calm and if they won't help try another dealer. Let's hope you don't have to deal with this for the next few years like these guys did.

I say try to get the work done as soon as you can. you are right about the tsb fix not doing anything for the marked up quill. and as far as I know, they just changed the pivot fork and cylinder that actuate the bearing. the bearing is still a steel bearing riding on an aluminium shaft. at least if you get the tsb fix done now and 15k down the road you notice that its doing the same thing, you will still be under warranty. That way you can have them fix it again or maybe try to talk your way into them at least installing the sleeve kit for free since the toyota fix failed. I am not saying that the tsb wont fix your issue nor do I have any experience with this fix, but I have heard of people having great long term success with the sleeve kit. just my 0.02 (which is 0.0205 your currency! at the moment says google! :canada:)

just bring it to them so its documented, so if or when it does get alot worse u have something already showing you were having this problem for a wile, will make it easier to make them preplace it, sometimes even out of warranty.
